JSngry Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 (edited) http://www.dustygroove.com/varfunkcd2.htm#415869 NEW Various -- Righteousness . . . CD . . . Blue Note (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s (2CD) Condition: New Copy The headier sound of Blue Note Records -- served up in a batch of tracks that focus on that late 60s period when the label started to open up into a much more righteous groove! The styles here are very much in step with the most progressive cultural movements in the US at the time -- and traditional soul jazz and hardbop modes are broken down and recast with a new sense of positive energy and spirituality -- all served up in styles that Blue Note hardly would have recorded a few short years before! Most of these tracks are instrumental -- done in grooves that range from funky, to modal, to soaring and searching -- but a few other great numbers have vocals by singers like Andy Bey or Eugene McDaniels, both artists who helped really hip things up nicely! 2CD package features a total of 18 tracks in all -- including "Psychedelic Pi" by Lonnie Smith, "Hey Hey" by Andrew Hill, "The Emperor" by Donald Byrd, "Black Rhythm Happening" by Eddie Gale, "The Phantom" by Duke Pearson, "I Have A Dream" by Herbie Hancock, "Peace" by Horace Silver, "Slow Drag" by Donald Byrd, "Fulton Street" by Eddie Gale, "Message From The Nile" by McCoy Tyner, "Slow Change" by Bobby Hutcherson, and "Soul Soul Soul" by Jackie McLean. Yeahyeahyeah, I know the music. But whaddupwidda RINGWEAR? That's certainly a new twist! Edited September 22, 2006 by JSngry Quote
Alexander Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 Not new at all. Costello's "Get Happy!!" had fake ringware in both the LP and CD editions. Quote
Late Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 I think I have most of those tracks, but that actually looks like a good compilation! Quote

sidewinder Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 It wouldn't be a Liberty pressing if it didn't have chronic ringwear and a clipped corner ! Great selection of music. Will look out for that one this weekend. Quote
Peter Johnson Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 It wouldn't be a Liberty pressing if it didn't have chronic ringwear and a clipped corner ! Isn't that the truth! Quote
JSngry Posted September 22, 2006 Author Report Posted September 22, 2006 (edited) Not new at all. Costello's "Get Happy!!" had fake ringware in both the LP and CD editions. Well, the CD would have to have the fake ringwear to duplicate the LP cover, wouldn't it? This is different, even if it is the same thing. Kinda like making the punchline of an old joke the setup for a new one, and never telling the old one. Edited September 22, 2006 by JSngry Quote
andybleaden Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 I must admit . I like this sort of stuff right down to the replica logos and all...it represents an era...nice and well done AND a stonkin compilation too! Quote

Fulton Street - Gale, Eddie Just drop "Soul" from Disc 1, and add a Grant Green tune (which one?), and it really is "Righteousness"! I'd drop "Black Heros" and "Soul", and replace them with "Capra Black" and "Hello To The Wind" on disc 1, and drop "Acid, Pot, or Pills" and replace it with "Zap! Carnivorous" on disc 2. Great concept, but you gotta get "Capra Black" and "Hello To The Wind" on there ("Message From The Nile" and "I Have a Dream" were inspired choices, too. Would also like to see "He Who Lives in Fear" on there). John Patton and Larry Young are also MIA. Of course, we could always each burn our own. I've never actually heard the Eddie Gale stuff. Can anyone describe it for me free of Dustygroove cliches (ie, avoid "righteous", "spiritual", and "groove" in the description). Thx. Quote

This is one of those cases where Dusty Groove type descriptions really are necessary and probably justified to get any kind of sense of the music.. Edited September 22, 2006 by Rooster_Ties Quote
HolyStitt Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 Not new at all. Costello's "Get Happy!!" had fake ringware in both the LP and CD editions. I thought the deal was the original LPs were placed in the covers before the covers had dried? Quote
Late Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 Felser — if you like most of the tunes that are on that compilation, you'll probably like the Eddie Gale stuff. The two selected tracks do have vocals, but they're ensemble vocals ... not like the vocals on United States of Mind. Gale isn't the strongest of trumpet players, but his two records on Blue Note (reissued by Water with great sound) communicate a lot of power — some very impassioned playing on those records. Gale's wife does get some solo vocal features on those records, but she's a fairly good singer. Overall, and at the price, the Gales on Water (Blue Note) are definitely worth checking out. They represent an interesting angle from the period: somewhere between Strata East sessions of the time and Horace Silver's and Bobby Hutcherson's later Blue Note work — perhaps with a dash of Sun Ra ... and the lightest sprinkle of Earth, Wind & Fire? Actually, when Columbia orginially released "Get Happy!!" on CD, they left out the fake ringware. It was added to the Rykodisc and subsequent Rhino editions, however. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 wow are those European BN comp covers? those are great! Quote
ejp626 Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 wow are those European BN comp covers? those are great! I just picked up the Righteousness comp for £7, which I thought was a great price. I do have most of the material already, but there are a few new tracks. I'll take a look at the other comps a bit later. Quote

bluesForBartok Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 I mentioned these a while ago. Glad to see a few of you picked them up. Quote
J Larsen Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 Did they mix in artificial cracks and pops into the sound, as well? When you get to the end of "side 1" do you hear the needle hit the center label? (I think someone actually did do the latter on a cd once.) Quote
bluesForBartok Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 Yes and it replicates a classic gatefold album and includes a few marijuana seeds as a bonus!
