Soul Stream Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 Put on "Each Time" and listen to what a great organist Patton was. Quote
sidewinder Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 Amen to that. Will have to pull out the vinyl slab later in the day. Just been listening to that July 27th 2001 performance at 'Smoke'. Too bad that Big John and Eric Alexander weren't recorded in a rehearsed, studio environment - that would have been good. Big John had more soul in his little finger than the summation of current R&B crew/rappers/deck-jockeys/hangers-on etc.. Quote
shaft Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 Did just that ' Yeah he was smokin' and it aint grass BTW Nice guitar solo by Grant green to. One of Pattons best. /Shaft Quote
andybleaden Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 I have to agree with all the above. good overlooked record by bjp Quote
Big Al Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 Put on "Each Time" and listen to what a great organist Patton was. Aw HECK YEAH!!!!!! Quote
robertoart Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 Oh Baby!!!!!!! Which one is a better remaster? The Mosaic or the JRVG. Quote
shaft Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 I have the JRVG. It sound unusually good for JRVG ;.) You should not be unhappy with that edition. Nice cover too ;-) /Shaft Quote
robertoart Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 thanks for the info Shaft. I have the TOCJ and the Mosaic box version. It's just that I've got all the JRVG Patton's accept that one, and I feel somehow incomplete not having that as well. so your thumbs up for sound is a big plus. Quote
shaft Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 freelancer I know what you mean. That feeling of incompletiveness has cost us a lot of money right? I have the Soul Jazz 24-bit JRVG from 2000 (with the dark OBI). I don't know if there are any other JRVG editions of this? Best of Luck anyway! /Shaft PS The Mosaic was a select? Quote
andybleaden Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 yup part of his select box set Quote
shaft Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 Thanks! I got to get that "Along came John" album. Which version is the best? /Shaft Quote
Michael Weiss Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 (edited) This has been a proud piece of my vinyl collection since college. Used to play the title track on gigs with Pookie Johnson and Al Kiger. Harold Vick and Blue got the feelin'. Blue's vibrato - soulsville. Edited September 15, 2006 by Michael Weiss Quote
jazzhound Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 i just picked up the lp over the weekend. Tony Williams obviously was influenced by this lp...I guess nothing comes from out of the blue in the music world! Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 15, 2006 Report Posted September 15, 2006 I'm on my fourth copy of this; mono, stereo, TOCJ, then Mosaic. I got the first one in 1967, at the same time as "Along came John". I've played "Along came John" just a trifle more than "Oh baby", a good bit more than any of the other Pattons. It's not because I LIKE them more, though. They just get out more MG Quote
robertoart Posted September 16, 2006 Report Posted September 16, 2006 Thanks! I got to get that "Along came John" album. Which version is the best? /Shaft I personally like the Patton JRVG's because I hear more detail in Grant's comping on them and also because they seem to have more BOT-TOM. Quote
shaft Posted September 16, 2006 Report Posted September 16, 2006 Thanks freelancer! I'll go looking for it ;-) /Shaft Quote

Used to play the title track on gigs with Pookie Johnson and Al Kiger. Harold Vick and Blue got the feelin'. Blue's vibrato - soulsville. That's wild Michael! Cool to know that some of the material from this LP made the 'rounds at the clubs. Mike LeDonne told me he used to play "Oh Baby" as well with Joe Dukes since it was a real favorite of Joe's. Great songs on this LP. I know I've said it before on the forum, but....John Patton told me "Oh Baby!" and "Along Came John" were his two favorite LPs he made. Quote
Peter Johnson Posted September 16, 2006 Report Posted September 16, 2006 Spinning my NY USA stereo copy right now. Thanks for making me take this off the shelf, Mike! Quote

As far as I know, "Fat Judy" is the only Soul Jazz tune mentioned in Science Fiction. It's in a Michael Moorcock book - I think "The entropy tango" (1981). This was very slightly before Acid Jazz took off. MG Quote
Soulstation1 Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 my fav cut one to twelve also ben dixon on the single oh baby i like the way bjp changes the tempo on this one Quote
Eric Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 I have been listening to Patton's solo on Fat Judy over and over again as I drive in to work. Talk about in the pocket and butt shakin' Quote
