Aftab Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 So . . . . anyone pick 'em up? I grabbed the Jmac and Silver, and also last month's Dorham. Unfortunately, that's all I had time to do - still shrink wrapped Between Demon's Dance, MF Horn 3,4&5 and the Chet Baker/Mariachi Brass reissues (don't laugh), this is a great month or so Quote
mikelz777 Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 (edited) I picked up Donald Byrd's "Royal Flush" and "Off To The Races". I dig all the Byrd/Pepper Adams collaborations and these two certainly didn't disappoint. I'm looking forward to "Cat Walk" which is supposedly coming out early next year. Alexander Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 I already had 'em all, so I passed for now. I might upgrade the Jackie at some point in the near future, though... Quote
milestones20 Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 Picked up the Quebec and the Mobley from last month and the Silver and Morgan from this month, so far have 0 complaints. The Mobley and the Morgan are probably my 2 favorites, but I'm a sucker for anything with them on it. Quote
mikelz777 Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 That's the one I missed! I have to pick up Mobley's "Another Workout". Quote
ep1str0phy Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 I got Demon's Dance (although I'm so blasted I ended up falling asleep through the middle three tunes on my first spin). Sounds good--high caliber Jackie, with Woody Shaw in fine, authoritative form. Jack DeJohnette opens things up nicely. Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 I got the Quebec and Mobley when they came out and the Griffin a week ago. The Griffin was the only one I didn't already have on LP and I greatly enjoyed it. Only listened once so far. MG Quote
sal Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 Picked up the Byrd, Griffin and Dorham last month, and I've got the McLean, Morgan, Hutcherson and Hubbard on the way. "Royal Flush" was really an eye opener. Its quickly become my favorite Byrd session. Byrd's sessions, while consistantly solid, typically don't exceed the status of "typical BN hard bop" for me, but Royal Flush is really something special. Quote

I've got this session on the Mosaic, and I agree with everything you said. "Jorgie's" was the soundclip on the Mosaic site that sold me on this set. Quote
sal Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 I'm not sure why so much of what I've read regarding "Here To Stay" has been verging on the so-so/negative side of things. This is a top notch Freddie Hubbard session. Aside from "Breaking Point" and "Ready for Freddie", I haven't been much of a fan of Freddie's Blue Note sessions as a leader, but this one has joined the ranks of his finest work IMO. Excellent batches of RVGs these past couple of months! Quote
Shawn Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 I haven't upgraded to any of these yet. It's much easier to control your spending when you're flat broke! Quote
sidewinder Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 Is the sound of the 'Demon's Dance' any better than the Conn? Quote
jazzbo Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 It was never a Connoisseur, I'm pretty sure. It was one of the early cds, and then part of the Collectors Classics re-pressings, right? Quote

shaft Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 Hi, Has anyone checked if Morgan's City Lights is in mono or stereo??? /Shaft Quote
sidewinder Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 It was never a Connoisseur, I'm pretty sure. It was one of the early cds, and then part of the Collectors Classics re-pressings, right? Definitely a Conn from 1997. Just checked my copy. Has one bonus track. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 (edited) Okay. Weird. My mind is playin' with me. I have the JRVG and sold my earlier edition. Thanks! Edited September 22, 2006 by jazzbo Quote
BruceH Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 I picked up Royal Flush, Another Workout, The Cooker, and Here To Stay, so far. I already had the first two, but must say that the focusing effect of having Royal Flush as a separate album has made me really appreciate it all the more. Listening to it on the Mosaic, it just sort of gets blended in with all the other Pepper/Adams sessions. So much more of a "one-two-punch" as an album. (Of course, I always liked that cover.) The other favorite is Here To Stay. I long considered Open Sesame and Ready For Freddie to be my first and second favorite Hubbard Blue Notes, with Here To Stay a strong third. Now, I don't know---listening to it recently has moved it up a notch or two. Another very strong session that somehow didn't get released at the time. Quote

Demon's Dance was a regular release in 1987 and then repressed in the third and last Collector's Choice batch in 1997. It has never been a Connoisseur! It also has no bonus track. There were two Connoisseur batches in 1997. Each had a Jackie McLean title. They were Swing Swang Swingin' and 'Bout Soul respectively. What exactly is it you have, Sidewinder? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 Is the sound of the 'Demon's Dance' any better than the Conn? Never was a Conn (I know, that's already been said), but the earlier McMaster was (if I remember correctly) taken from an LP. Is the new RVG also from an LP??? How does it sound??? Would have to be an improvement on the earlier CD issue, but how much of an improvement is the question. Quote

Daniel A Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 Never was a Conn (I know, that's already been said), but the earlier McMaster was (if I remember correctly) taken from an LP. I don't think that was the case. My McMaster editon sounds like it's a tape transfer. Quote
