Late Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 PCD 23842 Jordan,Clifford/In The World 2415 Woo-hoo! The wait is over. Now if only Charles Brackeen's Rhythm X had been in that batch. Quote

etherbored Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 i won't address 'concierto' because it's so ubiquitous. 'studio trieste' is credited to three primaries: chet baker, jim hall, and hubert laws. it also features jack wilkins, kenny barron, jorge dalto, gary king, george mraz, steve gadd, and sammy figueroa with arrangements by don sebesky. the track listing: is: 1. swan lake (8:42) 2. all blues (9:43) 3. malaguena (9:44) 4. django (10:02) i feel its a well-rounded somewhat typical CTI date, in the better sense of the word, due to chet's presence. the sides were recorded in march and april of 1982, so he was in fine form. -e- sound clips here... montg Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 cduniverse shows these CTI imports as preorderable at 17.99 each. I was curious about those too. Any stand outs (aside from Red Clay perhaps)? Quote
Late Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 1. Vienna 2. Doug's Prelude 3. Ouagoudougou 4. 872 Clifford Jordan: tenor saxophone Julian Priester: trombone Don Cherry or Kenny Dorham: trumpet Wynton Kelly: piano Wilbur Ware or Richard Davis: bass Al Heath or Roy Haynes or Ed Blackwell: drums Recorded Spring 1969 Headman — I actually haven't heard this session, but have always wanted to. If it's anything like Jordan's other Strata East sessions, we're in for a treat. Quote
Matthew Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 (edited) KICJ 2177 Evans,Bill(p)/Montreux: II 1500 I was looking through a discography of Evans, and this was Evans' only release on CTI (????). How'd that happen? Didn't think Creed Taylor had that much contact with Evans. This will be a nice pick up though. Edited September 9, 2006 by Matthew Quote
Guest akanalog Posted September 10, 2006 Report Posted September 10, 2006 if you live in new york and are curious, downtown music gallery sells a uh CD version currently but it isn't legit and is from LP. don cherry is on half the tracks and the other half have dorham. half the tracks have two of the drummers and one half have one guy. overall a good album. not awesome. mellow. pretty late in the game and progressive for a wynton kelly appearance, right? i will relisten but off the top of my head i recall really liking the long first track and the others are good but weren't as good. maybe a legit CD issue would clear up the sound of the double drumming. Head Man Posted September 10, 2006 Author Report Posted September 10, 2006 Looks to me as the Japanese version of the upcoming US box set. You're right Lol. According to the 'HMV Japan' website HMV Japan the 'international' box set is due out on 19 September with the Japanese box set on 18 October. Both sets are three CDs and a DVD. I'm not an expert on Weather Report so I'm not sure whether its a 'best of' or new/unreleased tracks - or both? Quote
Guest akanalog Posted September 10, 2006 Report Posted September 10, 2006 i saw a promo copy of the weather report box in a record store and it looked like a best of to me in my brief glance. pretty disappointing. Quote
Tony Pusey Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 Any opinions about the CTI albums by Art Farmer and Randy Weston? I hated Lateefs contribution to this label........ Quote
JSngry Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 (edited) The Weston is pretty cool, imo. "Slick", but in a good way. Great charts, great playing. Electric piano on some cuts, but that's not a problem for me. Definitely a "production" album, but it ain't the meat, it's the motion... Edited September 23, 2006 by JSngry Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 Pity they're not issuing Fats Theus "Black out". I might spring for the Weston. That's my favourite Weston by a long margin (oh, except for the one with Frank Haynes). MG Quote
jazzbo Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 Tony it's far from my favorite Weston, I view it more the way that Jim does. It's well worth having, it's nothing like the (tongue in cheek I hope!) CTI by Gentle Joseph Teefski! Quote
Tony Pusey Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 Thanks Guys, but what about the Art Farmer? And, while we are up and running, the Farrel disc, Out Back? Quote
DMP Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 I can't really remember, but always thought there was something a little odd about the Jim Hall "Studio Trieste" - did they take old tracks and put new solos on them, or something like that? (I think that on "Youkali" it was old solos on new tracks.) The Farmer/Hall "Big Blues" is good, but tame. (Plus it has a version of my least favorite tune - "A Child Is Born.") All the Farrell "CTI"'s are worth having - a nice blend of his post-bop style with a few concessions to what was happening in the '70's. Where's "Penny Arcade?" The Weston has some of the best Grover Washington on record, for what that may be worth to you. Quote
Tom in RI Posted September 23, 2006 Report Posted September 23, 2006 Hey Jim, I saw Clifford Jordan play around 1979. I had him sign my copy of Glass Bead Games. When I asked him his favorite lp he said The Adventurer, his most current issue at the time. I guess I couldn't argue with that. Both In the World and Reasons in Tonality were cutouts with the no respect price of $1.99 here in RI around that time. Man, I miss cutouts. Quote
