the season is not even new and the browns are already screwing up:

Broken water pipe forces Browns to cancel stadium events

From WKYC/Cleveland

CLEVELAND -- A broken water pipe has some Browns fans and concert goers crying "foul."

A pipe burst during a concert at Browns Stadium over the weekend, preventing half the toilets from flushing, and now the damage has cancelled some other events.

The problem started at The Country Music Flip Flop Tour, which drew more than 50,000 people to Browns Stadium.

Many started tailgating early in the day.

By 8 p.m., an eight inch pipe carrying fresh water broke, sending 50,000 gallons into Browns Stadium.

The broken pipe also stopped almost half the toilets from flushing.

"When you lose that pressure, then you have a problem with them having the ability to flush as they're designed to flush," said Darnel Brown with the City of Cleveland.

The smell was too much for concertgoer Tim Junglas.

"At first you didn't notice anything because you were walking in and saying it's a stadium, that's what happens, then it got worse and worse and the smell was just permeating everything, it got bad," said Junglas.

While fans searched for working restrooms, the locker rooms suffered the most damage.

"There's quite extensive repair that has to go on there, and the priority right now is football and we have to get ready for the season, that's why we have to cancel certain events," said Browns Senior Vice President Lew Merletti.

Family Night," which was scheduled for August 3rd, has been canceled.

The Browns are also canceling the Ticket Tailgate event this Friday, but want to remind fans that single game tickets still go on sale on Saturday through Ticketmaster.

"We're going to take these next few weeks and make sure we have all those repairs made and be ready to go for our first game," said Browns Communications Vice President Bill Bonsiewicz.

Even through no one knows yet why the pipe broke; they say it was definitely bad timing that it happened with so many people at the stadium.

Going back to the subject of retired players' injuries, there was an interesting photo spread in last week's Sports Illustrated. It was a reunion of Heisman Trophy winners. Most guys were striking football poses, but Earl Campbell conspicuously remained seated, presumably because of his physical condition.

SI had an article about him and a few other players some time back. Campbell takes about 5-10 minutes to(barely) get up a few stairs, and he can't stand for long.

Hall of Fame Game (Steelers v. Saints) is on Sunday evening, 8 pm ET. Unfortunately it's on the NFL Network, which isn't available here. I see no point in that network having exclusive game rights, if they don't show on anyone's cable networks.

The sticking point between cable companies and NFL Network is that the cable companies want the channel to be a "premium" channel they can charge extra money for. The NFL wants the channel available to anyone with the expanded basic (analog) cable package at no additional charge to the customers. That's where it's sat for a few years now.

Comcast announced their intention to move the channel into their "sports package", in response the NFL put a letter on their website telling people they should cancel their Comcast in protest and go with Directv.

And the fans get caught in the middle and don't get to see the games they show exclusively. :tdown

edit - why can't we pay the cable companies like $1/month for the channels we want, instead of having to pay for packages where half the channels aren't interesting or worthwhile.

I'd pay $20/month for 20 channels of my choosing (obviously not including the HBO's and other premium channels). CNN, Headline News, ESPN, ESPNews, ESPN 2, Discovery, A&E, History Channel, Fox Sports, NFL Network, and a few for my kids. That would be fine with me.

What's up with this story that the NFL is going to try to make photojournalists wear ads if they are on the sidelines? Sports Shooter

This sounds crazy, and frankly I hope all the magazines/newspapers boycott the NFL if they carry through on this plan. The Chicago Tribune claims they will no longer run photos, but we'll see how long they stick to that if the Sun-Times runs them.

Colts had a leaky "D" last year, but the offense was good enough plus the "D" was able to gather themselves for a few games during the playoffs to enable them to win the Super Bowl. They had to make a miraculous comeback against NE, but Manning & Co were able to take advantage of a winded NE defence to pull it off.

This year is a different story:

1. They've lost three defensive backs to free agency, including their starting duo.

2. DT Corey Simon has been released. He is now an unofficial first round bust.

3. Leading tackler Cato June was lost to free agency.

4. LT Tarik Glenn announced his retirement. He was rock guarding Manning's left side. Colts traded next year's first rounder to pick up rookie Tony Ugoh as a replacement in the second round. In the meantime, they gave up a second rounder for McFarland. They'll be missing a few valuable picks in next year's draft.

5. Now the latest news out of camp: DT Booger McFarland may be out for the season.

POSTED 11:11 a.m. EDT, August 5, 2007

BOOGER HAS A BOO-BOO, BUT HOW BAD IS IT?

On the same day that the Colts terminated the contract of free-agent bust Corey Simon, the guy whom the Colts acquired last season to take his place was undergoing an MRI.

And before word of the Booger McFarland MRI broke, an anonymous tipster advised us that the injury is serious, and likely season-ending.

Though we have not yet corroborated this tip, and are not officially reporting that McFarland is out for the year, we can understand why the Colts aren't announcing the severity of the injury, if it indeed is severe. With an even greater need in the interior of a defensive line that was getting shredding against the run before it somehow picked it up in the playoffs, the Colts would likely like to finagle a trade with a team that doesn't realize the urgency that the team might now be facing, because that would drive the price tag north.

Safety Bob Sanders is one of the best in the game, but he's injury-prone and likely won't last the season.

Will the Colts even be able to win their division?

I honestly don't see the Colts winning their division this year due to all the changes/problems that have come their way. But Manning is one of those guys who can rally and lead a deficient team when he's in the zone, so you never know.

time warner doesnt carry nfl net.

aloc, being a steeler fan, must resort to listening to the broadcast over nfl gameday, which makes all broadcasts for the season available for $29.95 on broadband, and is better quality sound than mlb broadband efforts.

the steeler cast, minus the remarkable myron cope, is still listenable. wfan carries the giants.

SS1 wants to know how Randy Moss is doing in camp. :g

The impact of Randy Moss. Simply put, Tom Brady hasn’t had a receiver like Moss, and watching the two develop a rapport has been intriguing at times. Initially, Brady seemed to be struggling to adjust to the speed in which Moss got down the field, with some of the long, rainbow-arcing passes falling short of the mark. But on the day Moss appeared to tweak his hamstring, the two were putting on a clinic of sorts – whether it be long balls, intermediate routes, patterns across the middle, or near the goal-line. As long as Moss is healthy, he is going to be a major weapon.
