dave9199 Posted August 29, 2006 Report Posted August 29, 2006 Going through a divorce, decided to move near my brother who lives in Durham. Lots o' stress, but I'm looking forward to it also...and scared as shit. I'll be running right into the hurricane coming up from Florida. I've been trying to find a job but haven't had any luck. I work in digital printing and have come close, but positions didn't materialize. I'm gonna try to catch up with ...impossible, haven't seen him since Providence late 2002. Anyway, if anyone has any lead for a job or just back-patting words, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Good luck, Dave. There are a lot of good people on the board. Check in on live chat on weekends, and we'll cheer you up! Quote
kh1958 Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Have you inquired to see if there are any opportunities with this Digital Art publisher? http://www.ballisticpublishing.com/ Quote
chris olivarez Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 The hurricane is now a tropical storm and it will probably dissipate more by the time it reaches NC and hopefully your adversity will dissipate and disappear quicky!!!! Good Luck. Quote
sidewinder Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Good luck with the move. Keeps life interesting ! Quote
.:.impossible Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Dave, I'm about 2.5 hrs from Durham, but we will definitely meet in Chapel Hill/Carrboro for music. Don't worry about hurricanes. You will be far enough in-land that they won't affect you too much. Just rain. You are going through a lot of change right now. Hopefully a new place will do some good. Work will fall into place. I don't have any leads for you out there, but Durham usually has plenty to offer. You are skilled. I'm sure you will find something sooner than later. Quote
Eric Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 I have lived in the Triangle area a couple times and still visit relatives there every year. It is a nice area. Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill all have different things to offer. The ocean is close enough to visit (3 hours), but far enough away that all you get from hurricanes are rain showers. Real estate should be no worse than the northeast and hopefully less expensive. Enjoy and good luck!! Quote
Brownian Motion Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 I envy you. I lived in Durham for most of the 1980s, and I liked it. Duke University hosted the American Dance Festival every summer, and the clubs in Chapel Hill and Carrboro provided a smorgasbord of music--jazz, Irish, and bluegrass, both traditional and progressive. And that skyline! Quote
dave9199 Posted August 30, 2006 Author Report Posted August 30, 2006 Thanks to all who've posted. I've had a few people tell me they are envious of me doing such a big thing. They usually have kids & a house whereas I don't so it's much much easier. I will have 3, count 'em, 3 cats in my car in cages. It's gonna be a trying day for them also. My wife is kepping 1 cat (yeah 4 total). The oldest one she had before we met and I'm quite emotional about leaving both my wife & her cat. Quote
Ed S Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Best of luck Dave. Seems like more than a few of us are going through divorces at this point. As someone who has turned the corner after some very dark days, I can attest to the fact that things do work out. PM me if you ever need to "talk" to someone. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Believe me, the cats in the car thing will NOT be fun! Quote

dave9199 Posted September 2, 2006 Author Report Posted September 2, 2006 Well it's Sept 2nd and I'm still in CT. The movers were hauled off the road for 10 hours by the Dept of Transportation for not taking time to sleep so we scheduled for the same time the next day (5-6am). Come 8AM, no calls, no one showed, I start calling them and asking them to return my call. After 2 more hours & no calls, the fuck word stared flying in messages. About 10:30, I got a call from them. They weren't too happy with my messages as they had been stuck in bad weather and their phone had been dropped in water. I explained that if I had received a call, I would never have left them messages that I did and that I sincerely apologize, but asked her to realize that I had no idea what was going on and was wondering if I'd been ripped off (they have my credit card #). I said it was really unfortunate as neither could know what was going on. She understood my stress and I apologized again for my behavior so I hope it's been smoothed over. They called from NJ and are on there way here now so by 1 or 2PM, I should be on the road, but I don't know if I'll be able to drive straight through. I've been up since 4AM. I figure it'll take about 12 hours to get there. I'm looking forward to laughing at this whole situation once it's over. Quote

dave9199 Posted September 2, 2006 Author Report Posted September 2, 2006 So by 3pm I'm still waiting so I call & leave a polite message. I got a call a few minutes later: they are in the Bronx and hit a low awning and did some damage to their truck. They are fixing it and are still on their way here. I told them I wasn't going to drive overnight and they said they'd gladly stop when I wanted to, they just want to get home after this particular calamity filled trip. I hope the drive is uneventful. Who would believe such horse shit?! Sounds like the guy who we hired to pave the patio. Seemed like his whole family was slowly being wiped off the Earth by one calamity after another, preventing him from staring on the job at our house. I fired him, of course, Ebola virus notwithstanding. You have to come to an understanding that you're dealing with thieves and liars. I wouldn't believe a word your movers say. Be careful! Quote

Just read this. You are too nice a guy, Dave. Fire these assholes and call your credit card company right away to cancel the charge. I think you're being ripped off. I'm only 60 miles away, can come over and help you load a UHaul. Quote
dave9199 Posted September 2, 2006 Author Report Posted September 2, 2006 So it's 7:15pm, 13 hours after they should've shown up. They are in Greenwich, CT and asking me for fucking directions because their gps system isn't working. I so want to tell these guys to fuck off, but I couldn't get someone in fast enough. I should be in NC by now had I left around 6-7am. This is costing me only $1000, but it'll now cost an overnight stay somewhere. When they get here, I'm gonna punch all of them in the ass. DO NOT USE TOP SECRET MOVERS OUT OF WASHINGTON DC. Their secret is...THEY SUCK....HARD!!! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 All the stress will make you stronger. More bs to follow. All the best. Quote
dave9199 Posted September 3, 2006 Author Report Posted September 3, 2006 How right you are Chuck! They are close, but understandibly exhausted as am I. We agreed to start at 6am tomorrow morning. Quote

Now I get it ... they are on the way to CT to get their stuff. Edited September 3, 2006 by Dan Gould Quote
dave9199 Posted September 3, 2006 Author Report Posted September 3, 2006 Check this shit out: They didn't fucking show and I couldn't get this c*nt on the phone. She finally called and said the truck sustained more damage from the awning accident they had. I fucking laid into her and told her to forget it & this was THE WORST customer service I have ever had and to refund my deposit which she said she would do though she hung up before I could say the word fuck directly to her. I put my stuff up for bids again and got 2 already. Maybe, just maybe, I'll be on my way in a day or two. Love, Dave Quote
dave9199 Posted September 3, 2006 Author Report Posted September 3, 2006 Take two. I accepted another bid for the same amount and I'll be going down tomorrow between 9-10am. Fingers crossed! Quote
