dave9199 Posted August 10, 2003 Report Posted August 10, 2003 Could somebody list what albums make up this box set? Thanks. Quote
Guest Chaney Posted August 10, 2003 Report Posted August 10, 2003 I hope you don't mind me chiming in Dave but could I also ask for general opinions - pro and con - of this set? I've had my eye on this one and was wondering if it's the way to go - this set or the seperate releases. Quote
Eric Posted August 10, 2003 Report Posted August 10, 2003 This should be helpful: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=A10d4vwvya9rk Funny, I was eyeing this myself after re-discovering Dolphy on the Trane Villiage Vanguard set. Think I will grab this! Eric Quote

Guest Chaney Posted August 10, 2003 Report Posted August 10, 2003 This one's on Ebay right now with a buy-it-now price of $89.99. ERIC DOLPHY Complete Prestige Box 9 CDs MINT Quote
J Larsen Posted August 10, 2003 Report Posted August 10, 2003 This is easily one of my favorite sets. I play it all the time. The sound is fine (to my ears) and the music is, for the most part, incredible. Dolphy's playing is uniformly stupendous throughout. That being said. $90 is way high for a used set. I got mine used for about $30. Shop around! Quote
The Mule Posted August 10, 2003 Report Posted August 10, 2003 That being said. $90 is way high for a used set. I got mine used for about $30. Shop around! $90 isn't way high for this used, $30 is way LOW. You got a helluva bargain. I think I paid about $75 for it used. In any case, it's an EXCELLENT box set if you love Dolphy. I have to keep reminding myself that all the music recorded therein was done in only a year-and-a-half! Some artists don't lay down that much great music in an entire career. Makes me think that some people just know they're not gonna be around long so they get it all out fast and move on... Quote
Jim Dye Posted August 10, 2003 Report Posted August 10, 2003 Great set with one BIG reservation. They screwed up the Five Spot sessions by editing out all the extra crowd noise and warm up sounds before and after the tracks. It was a deal breaker for me. Sounds silly, I know, but I have heard these records a certain way for years. I gotta hear that cash register ring and dolphy blow a scale before the opening bars of Potsa Lotsa. That being said, it IS nice to have all the studio stuff in one place. I'll stick with the individual albums. Quote
J Larsen Posted August 10, 2003 Report Posted August 10, 2003 You're right, Mule, $30 is low. In fact, I actually paid $40. The sticker is still on it. I didn't realize that the set is $140 new, I thought it was quite a bit less than that. I guess $80 would be a reasonable target price for a used set. Nonetheless, I've seen it for under $70 more than once in the shops. At $90 I'd still keep looking, but then again I'm a penny pincher when it comes to cds. Quote
king ubu Posted August 11, 2003 Report Posted August 11, 2003 A great set! one of my very favorite box sets. ubu (There's a similar threat right now over at AAJ, by the way) Quote
Claude Posted August 11, 2003 Report Posted August 11, 2003 www.Zweitausendeins.de sold the Dolphy set (identical to the US version) for 60€ new. Quote
mikeweil Posted August 11, 2003 Report Posted August 11, 2003 I didn't know the LPs before, so the absence of the audience noise didn't distrub me at all. I think the advantage of having all of the music together with additional material on a minimum of CDs by far outweighs this. And the sound is very good and the booklet is nice. I'd rather buy such a set than several more less-than-half-filled CDs. The music from the Five Spot is much more impressive when heard in session order with a minimum of CD changes. Now if you have a CD changer .... Zweitausendeins used to sell that set for DM 90 (!!!) when it was newly issued. As all the other Fantasy box sets, they don't have 'em anymore... Quote
.:.impossible Posted August 11, 2003 Report Posted August 11, 2003 Finally getting around to Dolphy, eh Dave? I knew you'd get around to him eventually. As you know, Dolphy is one of my favorite musicians in any genre. I don't own this set, though I have picked up most of the albums here and there over the last few years. If you find an affordable price, pounce. You can't go wrong. Quote
