alocispepraluger102
while listening to a french speaking classical station from brussels, there was this shostakovich symphony, and near the end this devastatingly beautiful ending came from nowhere. rarely in recent years have i been so moved. anyone got a clue about which symphony(not 5)? Chuck Nessa
My guess is #4. Ignore reviews and find the cheap version by Slovak on Naxos. Life ending stuff.
Matthew
My guess is #4. Ignore reviews and find the cheap version by Slovak on Naxos. Life ending stuff. Maybe #8? There was an interesting review of various performances of #8 in The Gramophone recently. That ends very quietly and beautifully. Chuck Nessa
Even if it is the 8th, get the Slovak 4th.
rostasi
The 4th ends in a Largo and the 8th in an Allegretto. I'm guessing it's the 4th. I love the Kitajenko version, but for quality for the dollar, the Naxos that Chuck mentioned is excellent. The box set of 11 discs with extra works is a bargain for about $50 with only a couple of less than stellar moments.
Spontooneous
Don't forget the end of #15.

John L
I love Shostokovich, but I "shelved" the fourth after I listened to it a few times. This thread has inspired me to go back and hear it again.

rostasi
this was the 'slovak'?No, it was the Kitajenko...the Slovak is here too if you're interested. BTW, that link with the recording - taken from an SACD - was an mp3 at only 80kbps. Rod
Tom 1960
THIS is a great box!!! Oh gosh, this is great stuff. You can get all 15 of Shostakovich's symphonies for pretty dirt cheap. The performances are highly rated also.
