Rooster_Ties Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 (edited) Let's give a title to the 3/7/66 Andrew Hill date. Calling it the Involution session drives me almost as nuts as when the Booker Ervin session with Woody Shaw was being referred to as Back From The Gig. I propose either Hope or Desire. Bertrand. The original title was to be "Change". I say let that stand. Chuck - you're not by chance confusing the "supposed to be issued as" title of the Hill Select trio session -- which was to be called "Chained" -- are you?? Your statement above is the first I think I've heard that there was any able title associated with the Hill/Rivers session (that last date on the big Hill Mosaic). OK, I just checked my big Hill Mosaic booklet, and there it is... March 7th, 1966 This is another session that did not see the light of day until it was issued in the Blue Note Reissue Series of tan double albums in 1975. Since we had only one unissued Sam Rivers LP in the Blue Note vaults, we put this Hill session featuring Sam with it rather than reissue other Rivers dates. Alfred like it a great deal at the time and was thinking about calling it CHANGE. It was even given the catalog number 84233 and prepared for release. GREAT session, by the way. I forget which tune, but there's one that always get me when the drummer (J.C. Moses) does this crazy funk backbeat thing for about 8 bars, right in the middle of a tune with otherwise more "conventional" Hill-session-type drumming (meaning more free). Kills me every time!! This post is too long already (for me to look up what I'm about to ask and post the answer here) -- but what other kinds of dates was J.C. Moses usually on?? He's not a name I know very well off the top of my head. Was this one of his few "out" (or "out"-leaning) dates?? Edited August 23, 2006 by Rooster_Ties Quote

J.A.W. Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 NYC5 and Dolphy for starters. NYC5 = New York Contemporary Five Currently available: Archie Shepp and the New York Contemporary Five - Storyville 8385 Quote
ep1str0phy Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 NYC5 and Dolphy for starters. Also (off the top of my head): Rahsaan, solo Shepp, Kenny Dorham. He's fairly outward leaning--appears on the more 'progressive' dates of a lot of more boppish musicians. Quote
jazzbo Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 I really dig J. C. Moses behind Bud Powell. FIRE! Quote
Bluerein Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 Smithville will be Connoisseured next June. Quote
Kyo Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 Smithville will be Connoisseured next June. Excellent, thanks for the information! Quote
Swinging Swede Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 Excellent news indeed, and I hope that it, in addition to having the two extra tracks, also will be in stereo for the first time. All Japanese releases (AFAIK) have been in mono, since that was the only way it was released originally, but since it was recorded in 1958, it must have been recorded in stereo. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 Smithville will be Connoisseured next June. So have all of the Conns been decided already for next June?? Seem quite a ways away. If you can share any other titles, please do!! Thanks!!! Quote
bertrand Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 I hope those extra tracks will be on the Smithville. Bertrand. Quote

He's fairly outward leaning--appears on the more 'progressive' dates of a lot of more boppish musicians. Marzette Watts' ESP and Savoy sessions, also Tchicai's Afrodisiaca (though he's one of many drummers there). Moses is one of my favorite drummers, for sure - also one of Max's, as he dedicated a piece to him that appears on The Long March. I like that Storyville is using the cover art from the International Polydor edition of NYCF v. 1 (albeit differently tinted). Quote

Yeah, the previous reissue was pretty garish--a thick, dated font with a half-orgasmic Shepp photo on the cover. Of all the pictures... I used to not be too fond of J.C.'s playing, if only because I always measured him by those live NCYF sessions (where the balance is horrible--completely swallows the subtlety of the approach, sounding like a disoriented marching band). He's been tremendous on everything else, though--and extremely versatile (Powell to--thanks for bringing it back up--those Watts sessions). Quote
ornette Posted August 25, 2006 Report Posted August 25, 2006 Compulsion is a great record. I remember buying the (mono) lp from HMV in Oxford Street, London, in about 1968. In those days you sat in booths to audition lps and we got the assistant to turn it up loud. Happy days. Quote

Rooster_Ties Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 Just felt like posting the cover, since it's one I've not seen very often. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Not to take the wind out of anybody's sails here, but I'm not too into this particular Hill. I have no idea why it's never jelled for me, because the players are all first-rate and there's nothing "wrong" with the music. I just get bored by it. Same with Andrew!!!. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Smokestack is the Hill BN date I've never quite jelled with yet. Quote
