Has Andrew Hill "Compulsion" ever been issued on CD? I know its in the Mosiac box. Has Blue Note re-issued in as a single? Is it available in Japan? Thanks.

Not that I am aware of.

I'm sure (but I'll check later) it will come out next year or so as a Connoisseur.

Reportedly (from MC, via Kevin) Andrew wanted "Compulsion" reissued first on CD (as a Conn) -- before "Dance With Death" and the session that would later be known as "Pax".

As it stands, I think there are only two sessions from the big Andrew hill Mosaic that have yet to see individual reissue on CD -- "Compulsion" - and the date with Sam Rivers (first issued under Sam's name, half of the double-LP "Involution" - if I remember correctly).

I'm betting both those Hill dates will get issued as Conns within the 3 or 4 sets of Conns, or maybe even as soon as two.

'Compulsion' is a monster of a session - one of the very best things on the Hill Mosaic box. The extra percussion from Nadi Qamar works very well with Andrew's percussive piano attack and there's a great sense of energy and purpose to this album. Very under-estimated !

Compulsion wil be an RvG in March. Don't know about the Smith but I'll check again.

Wow, an RVG?? Forgetting various issues people might (or might not have) with the sound of the RVG series -- I'll be VERY happy to see this session released on CD (finally!) by itself.

Any idea what other RVG's are gonna be released in March (and/or February and/or April)?? -- since they seem to be coming in sets of 6, spread about a month part (for a total of 12).

For those that already have the Mosaic box, why is it so important to get the repackaged CD single?

Kind of a nice thing to have, but more importantly (to me), I'd like to see "Compulsion" session available on the market again, so more people can have and hear it.

Exposure and availability are my priorities for some dates in particular (and in the case of Hill, every date).

For instance, shortly after I bought the Larry Young Mosaic, I was TOTALLY blown away by the "Mothership" session with Lee Morgan. To say that this was a life-changing event would be going overboard, but it certainly made me stand up and look at jazz organ a completely different way, and look at Lee Morgan differently as well.

I lobbied long and hard (over and over) for it's release as a Conn (back on the old BNBB - I used to mention "Mothership" every chance I got), because I believed it to be an important session (and for me, one of Lee's most important sessions, and certainly one of Larry Young's most important sessions), and I felt it was just wrong to have such great music out of print, and nearly totally inaccessible to anyone but the already converted.

That's why. :)

Excellent news! Only one to go after that and I'll have all Hill (except the new Mosaic Select) on CD! :D

And thanks in advance for the Smith update! :)

For the 99% of us who don't have unlimited funds, if you can buy the 7 individual Hill CD's for $70 and sell the Mosaic for $200, that's $130 that can be used for groceries, mortgage, gasoline, etc.

Bluerein.

Since you are 'in the loop' concerning upcoming releases, would you be willing to forward our wish lists to MC?

Mine would include the remaining Andrew Hill BN date originally with Sam Rivers (3/7/66), the two last Larry Young sessions (Contrasts and Heaven On Earth), the aforementioned Louis Smith, Kenny Burrell's Freedom, and I'm sure I could come up with more. I'm very happy to hear about Compulsion!!!

We could start a separate thread, whatever is easiest for you.

It's worked before (see the 1999 series of unissued dates including Hutcherson's The Kicker and Drums Around The Corner - these came from BN board requests).

Thanks,

Bertrand.

So its an altruistic desire to have the music available to a wider audience as opposed to some obsessive need to own every incantation of the music? :) I can live with that.

Compulsion is killer. Freddie Hubbard is an absolute monster on it. I have it on LP. It is a very atmospheric session. It has a really cool Star Trek Captian Kirk fight music type vibe to it in some parts. The African percussion works great. I like the cover a lot too. (one benefit of getting some sessions on LP). Mr. Hill is truly a master of American music.

As much as we bitch, we should be thankful that music like this is still being re-released. It took some time (how long -- too long!), but the material from two Mosiacs that I most regret not purchasing -- the Hill and the Jackie Mac (R.I.P.) -- is almost all available to everyone. And additionally, we got the added benefit of the Select, which I like only in parts, but am happy to have. After Compulsion is released, I will wait patiently for High Frequency and the Involution session.

Let's give a title to the 3/7/66 Andrew Hill date. Calling it the Involution session drives me almost as nuts as when the Booker Ervin session with Woody Shaw was being referred to as Back From The Gig.

I propose either Hope or Desire.

I recommend you get the Hill select ASAP - you won't regret it.

Some of my favorite Andrew music is on there.

Oh, I do have THAT one and love most of it. :)

I was talking about the new Select of Hill solo piano performances that is

coming out in October if I'm not mistaken. That stuff has never been out on CD.

The only other Hill I don't have yet is the early "So In Love" album

(just a matter of time though) and some Baba Russell album in

which case I have no idea where I might get that from.

Let's give a title to the 3/7/66 Andrew Hill date.

Nah, let's leave that to Cuscuna. He'll give it a new title for sure since the track

Involution from the old LP set isn't part of the session that'll be on the CD.

But if we make up a name of our own it'll just be more confusing in the end.

Same here, I didn't really know much about these guys back when the Mosaic

sets were available and I'm very happy to see most of the material out on

individual discs already. Now if they manage to get High Frequency out

within the next two or three Connoisseur sets that would be awesome!

Reinier, if you're in contact with Cuscuna please do me (and probably many other people

as well) a favor and ask him to finally put out an RVG of Bobby Hutcherson's Total Eclipse.

I've been trying to find the original CD version of it at a reasonable price for over a year

(on eBay and amazon marketplace) to no avail. There seems to be quite a demand for it! :)

The original title was to be "Change". I say let that stand.

I've been referring to it as Illusion. Sounds more album-like IMO. But what do I know? I didn't particularly like Pax, and thought it should have been called Intuition.

Although I haven't had a chance to really dig into this album (heard but not owned), it comes across as some of the best Hill has ever recorded--in comparison, at least, to the Mosaic Select cuts (with similar personnel). Qamar is more fully integrated into this group than the ensembles on the boxed set, and never have I received a better sense of just how successfully Hill can juggle multiple percussionists. Heavy, heavy shit.

I greatly appreciate Mosaic's efforts to bring unavailable music back into circulation, and also to present multiple sessions by an artist in a coherent, comprehensive fashion.

Having said that, given a choice, I prefer versions that mimic the individual releases.

I like to see the original cover art. I like to envision the package of music as it was originally released.

Mosaic serves an indispensible service making otherwise out of reach or obscure music available to a much wider range of listeners. But personally I generally favor the individual releases.

I'm fine with Change as a title, but I was not aware this was the originally intented title.

Bertrand.

Edit: I see the title Change is from the Mosaic box booklet, which I don't have.

Ronald, I second that "altruistic notion" of Rooster's - just a month back I gave a friend of mine three single Hills for birthday present (the one with Hutch, the two basses date, and Passing Ships), and he was totally astonished. I played him some of my Mosaic years ago, but besides "Point of Departure", none of it was available a few years ago (and it took PoD a while to appear, too), so for someone not as dedicated to the music and not as much of a collector of jazz (he has no Mosaics, spends his - limited - funds on classical music, almost exclusively, but loves jazz as well), there was no possibility to hear any classic Hill albums if not by asking someone for CDRs.
