How could I have not mentioned Randy, an old friend and as nice a person as he is a fine trumpet player and composer. I especially recommend his new big band CD "The Subway Ballet" (Evening Star) and his "Inside Out" (Nagel Heyer), with notes by yours truly. And Bix is the man inside the box.

I find Ralph Alessi to be an interesting player.

Of the players mentioned, I probably enjoy Ron Horton, Dave Douglas, Terel Stafford and Jeremy Pelt the most.

Vyacheslav Guyvoronsky (sometimes spelled Gayvoronsky) is a great trumpeter from Russia. He plays a rotary trumpet and is best known for duos with bassist Vladimir Volkov and more recently the accordionist Evelyn Petrova.

And then there's Kenny Wheeler.

The hottest, most original and explosive trumpeter in the world right now is Scott Tinkler.

Pardon the hyperbolly, but I believe it to be true. IMNSHO.

Other Australians well worth checking out: Peter Knight, Phil Slater, Eugene Ball, Paul Williamson.

Does this guy sport a pouch?

Bring it one youse cultural midgets. Scott is fucking brilliant - it's those who haven't heard him or have an in-built resistance to listening to anything Australian - or even considering jazz greatness dwells there - who are missing out. :P

Jeez - I have a lot of catching up to do - have not heard half these guys.

Personally, I'm a pretty big Erik Truffaz fan. Love Blanchard too. His first Blue Note album was great, IMO. Did not pick up the second as I was waitng for yourmusic - but they never picked it up.

Saw Ingrid Jensen last year at the Montreal Jazz Festival and she was very good.

Truffaz has a new recording, Face-a-Face, on Blue Note France (a 2 CD set), but it has not been released on U.S. Blue Note (and is not shown as a coming release on Blue Note's website).

One disc is with the quartet (Patrick Muller-p/elp, Marcello Giuliani-b, Marc Erbetta-d, plus Nya-rap), the other with the Ladyland group (Manu Cogjia-g, Michel Benita-b, Philippe Garcia-d, plus Mounir Troudi-voc and Nya-rap). Haven't heard it, but saw it in stores and was tempted to buy...

Seems the Ladyland disc has a 5 second dropout or skip or some other error, in case anyone buys it and wonders if his copy is defect.

If I have the unfortunate chance of having to choose between listening to Truffaz or Marsalis, I'ld rather go with Wynton

Truffaz bores me to death :(

Hm, I can't say I'm an avid fan... I could do without Nya, for sure. Heard some live recordings that I found pretty nice, and as this package consists of two live sets... of his Blue Notes I only have one that I got in a sale. Muller is nice, though. I don't know if he has any discs out, but his trio stuff (all acoustic, yet with some rhythmical stuff that at times goes into almost drum'n'bass territory) is quite good - heard him twice on swiss radio.
