Not sure what the concept was, but those are some damn good records, at least the ones I've heard. There's a good chunk of Pullen/Adams/Dannie in various records, some crazy Johnny Griffin, Steve Grossman, Sal Nistico, Slide Hampton, it goes on for a while. The Italian players are all good, so it's not like they meekly provide generic backing or something like that.

To be honest, I can't see any of them disappointing.

I'm not familiar with the Jazz A Confronto series (or Horo Records in general) as they were rarely reissued on CD, but Vol. 35 was the last? Personally, I like Enrico Pieranunzi on Vol. 24.

Horo had some other releases in the same period.  The Max Roach Loadstar is great, as is the Archie Shepp Jazz A Confronto 27.  A huge regret that there have been so few CD releases of the Horo material:

  • HDP 3-4 Sam Rivers trio Black Africa 1
  • HDP 5-6 Sam Rivers trio Black Africa 2

The Schiaffini and De Paula are both highly recommended

It is indeed, and I'm going to give it a spin today because of this thread

Steve Grossman – Jazz A Confronto 23

Listening to this one now on a bit of a whim. I'm not really a fan of Grossman (or not a big fan, I like him more or less) but this is great stuff, largely because of the Italian backing musicians, and Irio da Paula on guitar, who I don't know at all beyond @mjazzg 's recommendation above.

There is a short documentary filmed in 2012 about Aldo Sinesio (shortly before his death in 2013) on youtube. Looks like he had a lot of sealed Horo LPs still...

I think those are the ones they were trying to flog at inflated prices in 2014. See up thread

Any views on the Jazz a Confronto series? They're a frequent feature of vinyl fairs. What was the concept meant to be?

Some mention above of the Enrico Rava but does anyone rate any of the others?

I've got the Waldron. Nothing special, he made much better records in those years.

I was put off for a long time, first because I assumed that they were compilations, and then later because I didn't really like the Lee Konitz one.

Funny, I would have said the same.
I bought them both in the late 70´s at the old "Radio Kratz" on Maria Hilfer Strasse , and still love them most.
