mikeweil Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 I'm not sure whether there already is or was a thread like this, but nonetheless ..... Rules: Place a jazz-related question. He/she who gets the answer correct first may place the next one. Please state your source for the question and answer to avoid arguments. The first question: Who is Jan Garbarek's favourite jazz tenor saxist? Quote
andybleaden Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 I remember him talking on the radio BBC Radio 3 and he mentioned John Coltrane as his inspiration etc...is that right...do I get the chocolates? Quote
andybleaden Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 I am devastated (and hungry now) Off for more revision Quote
Niko Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 I am devastated (and hungry now) Off for more revision just realized I ate 200 gr of chocolate for lunch without thinking about it... can't decide between guessing dexter gordon and guessing albert ayler - suppose that means I have no clue... mikeweil Posted August 15, 2006 Author Report Posted August 15, 2006 Excellent idea, but it's not quite that crazy a choice ..... Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 just one guess allowed? Joe Henderson Quote
mikeweil Posted August 15, 2006 Author Report Posted August 15, 2006 I'd say one name per post, but you can try again as many times as is necessary ..... Quote
tjobbe Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 if not Ayler, what about Peter Brötzmann Cheers, Tjobbe Quote
mikeweil Posted August 15, 2006 Author Report Posted August 15, 2006 (edited) No correct guess yet ..... lemme give you a hint: he's black, and was born before 1930 Edited August 15, 2006 by mikeweil Quote
andybleaden Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 Actually , thinking about it again I would go with Johnny Hodges perhaps...ooooohh now I am being indecisive Quote
mikeweil Posted August 15, 2006 Author Report Posted August 15, 2006 Ben Webster and Johnny Hodges were among those he confessed listening to every day, but his favourite was someone else - and a tenor man, as I said. Quote
tjobbe Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 I believe the tenor he listens to most is..... Jan Garbarek cheers, Tjobbe Quote
andybleaden Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 then that would push me to Sonny Rollins but he was born in 1930 wasn't he? Quote
mikeweil Posted August 15, 2006 Author Report Posted August 15, 2006 Okay, one more hint: it's a guy from the Hawkins school. Quote
RDK Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 I keep thinking this sounds like a trick question. Like: who was Buddy Rich's favorite drummer? Quote
P.L.M Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 BEN WEBSTER? What's not impossible as WEBSTER lived in Holland and tour Scandinavia often in the sixties what make the probabilities that he has been seen by GARBAREK playing on stage credible. Quote
mikeweil Posted August 15, 2006 Author Report Posted August 15, 2006 (edited) As posted above, he stated that he listened to Ben Webster and Johnny Hodges every day, but that his favourite was someone else ..... My source is the liner notes of this CD: Jon Gordon, The Things We Need (Justintime Records) Gordon mentions a conversation he had with Garbarek in his liner notes, and there .....
