catesta Posted August 9, 2003 Report Posted August 9, 2003 Guy, I think your list for only two years is rather impressive. I included people my dad took me with him to see. Quote

RainyDay Posted August 10, 2003 Report Posted August 10, 2003 I grew up during the golden age of television and in those days, it was not uncommon to see jazz artists on the Jackie Gleason Show, Ed Sullivan, Nat King Cole, and probably a couple of others I cannot remember. I never saw Pops in person but I saw him on TV all the time. In addition to Pops, I recall seeing Duke, Count, Harry James, Dizzy Gillespie, one or the other of the Dorsey brothers, Gene Krupa, and Louis Prima. Ed Sullivan may seem like dated claptrap to the younger generation but that guy brought to us every little slice of Americana every Sunday night. It's too bad there is nothing like that anymore. One act would be a guy doing rope tricks followed by Duke Ellington. There is so no place to see jazz on television on a regular basis any longer unless you have digital cable or satellite. Rosie O'Donnell will always have a soft spot in my heart because the last time I saw Joe Henderson perform was with Chaka Kahn on O'Donnell's talk show. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 10, 2003 Report Posted August 10, 2003 A few interesting musicians I don't recall anyone listing ( if I'm in error, sorry): Sammy Benskin Gene (Clarence) Shaw Wilbur Ware Vi Redd Frank Chace Jabbo Smith Louis Metcalf George Braith Lester Lashley Charles Tyler Allen Eager Turk Murphy Sonny Greer JR Monterose Louis Smith Shirley Horn Truck Parham Franz Jackson Eddie Harris Bobby Bradford John Carter Bob Skiver aka Rufus Brown - for CA Gene Barge Jump Jackson Quote
randissimo Posted August 11, 2003 Report Posted August 11, 2003 Dig it, I just worked a jazz festival gig w/ Rufus Harley.. For those of you who might not know who he is, he's one of the few existing jazz bag pipe artists and is also a sax player.. What a krazy gig! we opened with "A Love Supreme" .. Quote
bertrand Posted August 11, 2003 Report Posted August 11, 2003 I saw Charles Tyler in the mid-80s in Paris - the first set was all Monk tunes. He played baritone most of the night. Bertrand. Quote
brownie Posted August 11, 2003 Report Posted August 11, 2003 Very impressive lists all around. Among the ones that no one on the Board seems to have seen perform (in this MIA list are only those some of us would have been of age to catch) are: - Tina Brooks - Serge Chaloff - Sonny Clark - Eddie Costa - Tony Fruscella - Wardell Gray - Grant Green - Johnny Hartman - Tubby Hayes - Ernie Henry - Elmo Hope - Bunk Johnson - Booker Little - Dodo Marmarosa - Brew Moore - Fats Navarro - Herbie Nichols - Django Reinhardt - Art Tatum Thought Chris A. would have included Bessie Smith but something must have gone wrong. Howver my jaw dropped when I saw he had caught Charlie Parker in performance. It touched the floor when I saw the name Scott LaFaro at the end of the list. Wow! Some others I have seen and who have not been mentioned yet: - Mose Allison - Chet Baker (sure others here have also seen him) - Sidney Bechet - Big Bill Broonzy - Don Byas - Kenny Clarke - Johnny Coles - Sonny Criss - Oscar Dennard - Bill Dixon - Eric Dolphy - Roy Eldridge - Booker Ervin - Erroll Garner - Lars Gullin - Hampton Hawes - Bobby Jaspar - Jay Jay Johnson - Carmell Jones - Byard Lancaster - Jeanne Lee - Melba Liston - Moondog - Phineas Newborn - Oscar Pettiford (with Lucky Thompson) - Tony Scott - Lennie Tristano - Doug Watkins - Barney Wilen - Frank Wright Zat's all Folks (or almost) but I still have some time left. king ubu Posted August 11, 2003 Report Posted August 11, 2003 no need to feel sorry, Chuck - but I've seen Shirley Horn, and that was one hell of a show! November 2001, a long set (some 70 or 75 minutes), perfectly paced, programmed and performed, with Steve Novosel on bass and Steve Williams on drums. ubu Quote
JohnS Posted August 11, 2003 Report Posted August 11, 2003 I'm another old fart. If someone has been to to the UK since 1958 chances are I've seen them. The only notable omission is John Coltrane, I found out about his London concert the following day. Notable performances that come to mind include Miles Davis Duke Ellington Archie Shepp Ornette Coleman Albert Ayler AEOC Ray Anderson David Murray Henry Threadgill Joe Lovano John Scofiield Gil Evans Andrew Hill Gerry Hemingway Sun Ra Quote
ajf67 Posted August 11, 2003 Report Posted August 11, 2003 Man, those are some great lists. "A Love Supreme" on bagpipes? Yow! My list of notables is an awful lot shorter because I haven't been listening as long and heaven't lived where there are a lot of notable shows. If I lived in NYC it sure would be longer (but I'd never see my girlfriend and I"d be broke from going to shows!). My all-time favorite is still among the first: Milt Jackson at the Blue Note. Milt Jackson (3 times) McCoy Tyner (4 times) J.J. Johnson Stanley Turrentine Lou Donaldson Sonny Rollins James Moody Wallace Roney (twice) Oscar Peterson Buster Williams Joshua Redmon (three times) Billy Taylor (5 times, once with Milt Jackson) Renee Rosnes Quote

Among the ones that no one on the Board seems to have seen perform (in this MIA list are only those some of us would have been of age to catch) are: - Serge Chaloff - Sonny Clark - Eddie Costa - Johnny Hartman (we lived in the same brownstone) - Tubby Hayes - Elmo Hope - Booker Little - Brew Moore Thought Chris A. would have included Bessie Smith but something must have gone wrong. Howver my jaw dropped when I saw he had caught Charlie Parker in performance. It touched the floor when I saw the name Scott LaFaro at the end of the list. Wow! Some others I have seen and who have not been mentioned yet: - Mose Allison - Chet Baker (sure others here have also seen him) - Sidney Bechet (he shared a bill with Bird, as I recall) - Big Bill Broonzy - Don Byas - Kenny Clarke - Johnny Coles - Sonny Criss - Bill Dixon - Eric Dolphy - Roy Eldridge - Booker Ervin - Lars Gullin - Jay Jay Johnson - Carmell Jones - Byard Lancaster - Melba Liston - Moondog (didn't see him do his music thing) - Phineas Newborn - Tony Scott - Lennie Tristano - Doug Watkins Zat's all Folks (or almost) but I still have some time left. Brownie, I removed from your list names of artists I didn't catch. I left Moondog in although I never saw him perform. He used to stand on 53rd and Sixth, on the southeast corner, by the CBS (Blackrock) building. I guess that was, in a way, a performance. Quote
brownie Posted August 12, 2003 Report Posted August 12, 2003 Chris, were you able to hear Johnny Hartman sing while he was under the shower? As for Moondog, I never got to hear him at that Manhattan street corner but he was at one benefit at the East Village hall which later became the Fillmore East. Moondog was on the same bill as Archie Shepp and Wilson Pickett. Moondog was something but Pickett was really wicked! Quote

No, I heard Johnny Hartman sing, but not in the shower--not even in the hallway, because I was in the second floor and he had the basement apartment. Moondog did not perform music on that corner--he just stood there, tall and solemn, for hours on end, wrapped in an od (olive drab) army blanket, wearing a bogus viking helmet (the real ones did not have Wagnerian horns), and looking very imposing. rockefeller center Posted August 12, 2003 Report Posted August 12, 2003 Saw Moondog perform about eight years ago (w/the London Saxophonics) - a memorable experience. http://www.moondogscorner.de Quote
