Out2Lunch Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Just received an email from Fred at Mosaic: "We have finally secured the rights for the Mulligan Concert Band which we are very excited about. It will be a 4 CD set and will be released around September" Quote
jazzbo Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Good news I guess. Did they mention anything previously unreleased added to the set? Quote
Out2Lunch Posted March 18, 2003 Author Report Posted March 18, 2003 It will be a regular Mosaic set, I believe. I didn't get any particulars as to the content of the set, just that it will be four CDs and available in the Fall. Quote
desertblues Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Good news indeed! This band deserves the Mosaic treatment. Quote
Ed S Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 (edited) Great news. I know that Michael had this material on his wish list when Mosaic was first founded. Those idiots at Verve always had "plans" for it. I fact Tod, your parrot would have made an excellent Verve exec - "have plans, have plans, bwawk, bwawk. Glad to see the deal is signed and sealed. Perhaps this could lead to a few more Verve controlled sets. Edited March 19, 2003 by Ed Swinnich Quote

JSngry Posted March 19, 2003 Report Posted March 19, 2003 Perhaps this could lead to a few more Verve controlled sets. And perhaps this is the golden lining inside the silver cloud of recent Verval actiontivities? One can but hope that somebody with some sense has an ear over there now. Maybe Mark got a promotion! (Is there justice in this world, even though it be fleeting? Tell me no questions and I'll ask you no lies...) Quote
John Tapscott Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Good news I guess. Did they mention anything previously unreleased added to the set? This is good news, but I thought the set might have been larger. Off the top, I believe there were at least 4 or 5 Verve LP's of the Mulligan Concert Band. So that means there may some, but not a whole lot of new material on this set. I was kind of hoping for a treaure trove of unreleased material from the Vanguard, or from any of the live sessions, for that matter. But apparently it's not to be. Still, it will be great to have this on CD, as my LP's are a bit worn. On the other hand, it just struck me. Perhaps this set will be just the live material (most likely) or just the studio material. If they have split it up like that, then we might get a lot of new material. But I think it's most likely that it will be a complete set, both live and studio. Just have to wait and see. In any case, a must purchase. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 I'm afraid I'm completely ignorant of the Mulligan Concert Band. Can somebody shoot me some album titles, so I can look 'em up on AMG, or otherwise get hip to what should probably be something I'd be interested in?? Approximately when were they recorded (just a range of years will do fine)?? How big was/were the group(s)? Somebody, somebody, please edumacate me, please!! Quote

Rooster_Ties Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 Thanks Jim!!! The two audio-samples from the last link you gave do sound interesting - and far more restrained than I had expected. Actually, I'm sorry to admit that I really don't have much Mulligan in my collection. Nothing with him as a leader, and I think only a handful of things with him as a sideman. Birth of the Cool, of course, but besides that - I'm not sure what. I'm sure I do have a couple things, I think, but I'm hard pressed to remember anything specific. Damn, I really do need to unpack my music one of these days. 75% of my CD's are still in boxes, from moving about 8 months ago, and I'm starting to forget what I own!! Quote
brownie Posted March 20, 2003 Report Posted March 20, 2003 If there is nothing new on the Mosaic set, I'll stick to my LPs. I have the Verve Concert Jazz Band albums and give them a spin pretty often. Just love this music. There were five Verve albums (Gerry Mulligan and the Concert Jazz Band, GM and the CJB at Village Vanguard, A Concert in Jazz, CJB on Tour, and Gerry Mulligan '63). If Mosaic wants to do a complete Concert Jazz Band set they should add the DRG album Judy Holliday/Gerry Mulligan which had the CJB accompanying the singing actress. Quote
king ubu Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 (edited) This is what I got from Mosaic (sent them a mail yesterday asking about the contents of the Mulligan set) So there IS some unreleased stuff included. And it seem they're able to pack it on 4 CDs because they might for a change put more than 60 minutes on each CD... Anyway, it's great news, of course. ubu DISC ONE #1-8 Gerry Mulligan The Concert Jazz Band V6-8388 #9-12 unissued bonus tracks from same sessions DISC TWO Gerry Mulligan And The Concert Jazz Band On Tour: Guest Soloist Zoot Sims V6-8438 with three unissued bonus track DISC THREE #1-6 Gerry Mulligan And The Concert Jazz Band At The Village Vanguard V6-8396 #7-12 Gerry Mulligan Presents A Concert In Jazz V6-8415 DISC FOUR #1-8 Gerry Mulligan '63 The Concert Jazz Band V6-8515 #9-12 unissued bonus tracks from same sessions Edited March 21, 2003 by king ubu Quote
brownie Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 Ubu, thanks for the info. I'm sold. One more Mosaic box to purchase. Quote
king ubu Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 brownie: another question on Mulligan CJB: do you know where I could find the RTF-set (I think it's 2 CDs) that is mentioned every now and then Mulligan is discussed? And another one you might be interested: TCB (www.tcb.ch) issued a disc called "Concert Jazz Big Band Zurich 1960" which is quite nice: SWISS RADIO DAYS JAZZ SERIES VOL. 12 Gerry Mulligan bs/leader Conte Candoli tp, Nick Travis tp, Don Ferrara tp, Zoot Sims ts, Bob Donovan as, Gene Quill cl/as, Jim Reider ts, Gene Allan cl/bs, Bob Brookmeyer v-tb, Willi Dennis tb, Alan Raph b-tb, Buddy Clark b, Mel Lewis dr TCB 02122 ubu (by the way, if you check this "Swiss Radio Days" series: the Jones-Lewis disc is a stunner!) Quote
brownie Posted March 21, 2003 Report Posted March 21, 2003 Ubu, I know about the Mulligan SwissRadio CD but it has eluded me so far. Would gladly trade it against the Mulligan CJB in Paris 2CD set. I see that one off an on in secondhand shops. We're talking about the Europe 1 concert 2CD (RTF had nothing to do with this)? The TCB label has indeed issued excellent albums. Quote
Out2Lunch Posted March 21, 2003 Author Report Posted March 21, 2003 Ubu, Thanks for the details. The remastered former material plus the bonus of unreleased tracks make this a Win-Win situation for Mulligan fans and Mosaic Junkies as well. Quote
Vincent, Paris Posted March 29, 2003 Report Posted March 29, 2003 (edited) This is good news, but I thought the set might have been larger. Here is a quote from the liner notes of the "Village Vanguard" album : "Although several nights were recorded, Mulligan decided to select the album's final takes from one Sunday afternoon in order to maintain a consistency of mood." So there must be some unreleased material in the Verve vaults which won't be included in the Mosaic box. Unless those tapes have been lost as so many others... P.D. Posted March 29, 2003 Report Posted March 29, 2003 (edited) Concert in the Rain was the earliest MCBB recorded date to be released Prior to this the band had recorded a bunch of titles( 11 plus a version of I'm Gonna Go Fishin') for verve the last day of May, first three of june but these were never issued. ( Fishin' may have been the 2 sided 45 rpm single that was the first I ever heard of the band. Some titles were re - recorded and released on the official first album on verve. The books list 12 more titles from Santa Monica an 8 from the Village Vanguard. and a couple of unreleased concert tracks. From Ubus list it looks like we are getting some, but not all of the previously unreleased recordings. If the select were to include all these.. plus the early June sets, I suspect more than 4 CDs would be required.. Still getting a comprehensive set of CDs to replace my well used LP's is still something to look forward to. Edited March 29, 2003 by P.D. Quote
Brad Posted March 29, 2003 Report Posted March 29, 2003 The RTE was recently on ebay but I missed the auction (busy) and I want to kill myself for missing it. Aargh!. Haven't seen it listed on other online sites. If it is, they say it's out of stock. Quote
P.D. Posted March 29, 2003 Report Posted March 29, 2003 (edited) jazzcd uk indexThose RTE's are being sold off in the cutout bins around here. I know I've see the Clarke Bolands, and maybe the Ellington recently. The rest were esily available a couple of months ago. You might want to cgheck stores that specialise in these. Also a lot of these are also being released on European Laserlights. jazzcd uk index have the 2cd laselight for 7.99 pounds that's about $12 - 13 .00 there descriptions are limited so make sure you go for the Laserlight or you may duplicate something you have, or coming up in the Mosaic They also list a Zurich 1960 which is probably the Swiss Radio Days.
