JSngry Posted August 15, 2008 Report Posted August 15, 2008 just spoke to Lewis - who said, in essence: 1) Alice Coltrane probably wanted too much for the material she had, and so held it back thinking it was worth more than it really was worth - especially at a time when the CD business has been on a downward trend - This is, I'm told, essentially what happened to the Frank Tiberi collection as well. Bummer. Quote
Shrdlu Posted August 18, 2008 Report Posted August 18, 2008 Funnily enough, Ravi added me as a friend on Myspace. Shall I nag him about this? lol. Quote
Kyo Posted August 24, 2008 Report Posted August 24, 2008 Funnily enough, Ravi added me as a friend on Myspace. Shall I nag him about this? lol. Why not? I'm still hoping that one day we'll see a complete release of this session (without the later overdubs): 660202 JOHN COLTRANE SEXTET: Personnel: John Coltrane, tenor saxophone, bass clarinet; Pharoah Sanders, tenor saxophone, flute, piccolo; Alice Coltrane, piano; Jimmy Garrison, bass; Rashied Ali, drums; Ray Appleton, perc Location: 'Coast Records', San Francisco CA Date: 2/2/66 Engineer: Rudy Hill a. "Manifestation" (J. Coltrane) 11:44 CRC AU4950; Imp AS9223-2 more b. "Reverend King" (J. Coltrane) 10:45 CRC AU4950 more c. "Peace On Earth" (J. Coltrane) 9:03 Imp A9225, IA9360 more d. "Leo" (J. Coltrane) 10:08 Imp A9225 more 660202. Coltrane and other group members chant "Ah-um-mani-padme-hum" to open and close 660202b. The titles listed here were originally recorded by the six musicians listed here; at that session Alice Coltrane played only piano; and Jimmy Garrison was the only bassist. In 1972 Ms. Coltrane overdubbed herself on vibes and organ, added a string section, and substituted bass parts by Charlie Haden for Garrison's original parts on two titles: 660202c "Peace On Earth" and 660202d "Leo". These overdubbed versions were issued on "Infinity" Imp A9225. An unaltered version of "Peace On Earth" (660202c) was later released on "Jupiter Variation" Imp IA9360. As a further complication to an already complicated session, there is persuasive evidence that both 660202a "Manifestation" and 660202d "Leo" are excerpts edited from a single extended recording of "Leo". Late Posted August 24, 2008 Report Posted August 24, 2008 a. "Manifestation" (J. Coltrane) 11:44 CRC AU4950; Imp AS9223-2 more b. "Reverend King" (J. Coltrane) 10:45 CRC AU4950 more c. "Peace On Earth" (J. Coltrane) 9:03 Imp A9225, IA9360 more d. "Leo" (J. Coltrane) 10:08 Imp A9225 more All of these tracks have appeared on (Japanese and German) compact disc, but, you're right, it would be nice to have a complete session, with both overdubbed tracks and then the same tracks with no overdubbing. I personally find that the overdubbing enhances the latter tracks — an opinion I didn't initially think I'd have. The original tracks without overdubbing can certainly stand on their own, but Alice created a certain vibe with the overdubs that, to borrow from Dusty Groove, adds that "spiritual angle that we love so much." Also a rare opportunity to hear Coltrane on bass clarinet. (Truth be told, I don't find the bass clarinet playing all that interesting.) Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 24, 2008 Report Posted August 24, 2008 Wasn't that Dolphy's bass clarinet that he played? I had Infinity for a minute but the overdubs weren't my shit at the time. Wouldn't mind hearing the material unadulterated, but... Quote
7/4 Posted August 24, 2008 Report Posted August 24, 2008 (edited) I have Infinity on CD, I haven't listened to it in a while. I love it... I'll have to pull it and give it a listen. Edited August 24, 2008 by 7/4 Quote
