B. Goren. Posted July 26, 2006 Report Posted July 26, 2006 (edited) Time is running fast and Joanne Brackeen is already 68. I like her playing style and specialy when she plays Brazilian music. She first made a solid connection with Brazilian music when she played with Stan Getz between 1975-1977. Her recordings with Getz on SteepleChase are very recommended. This evening I'll listen to this one: BTW: Eddie Gomez is doing here a perfect job. Happy birthday Joanne and all the best. Edited July 26, 2006 by B. Goren. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted July 26, 2006 Report Posted July 26, 2006 I think that she is a wonderful pianist. I think that this album is especially great. Quote
mikeweil Posted July 26, 2006 Report Posted July 26, 2006 I've seen her live on several occasions as a sidewoman as well as with her own bands, and it was always great. She has a style of her own and didn't make any compromises - no ugly commercial record in her discography! My hat is off! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 26, 2006 Report Posted July 26, 2006 She's an intelligent woman and expert keyboard player. For my taste she's a pounder. Happy Birthday. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 26, 2006 Report Posted July 26, 2006 I've enjoyed Snooze, on Choice, but not heard much beyond that. Happy Birthday. And her ex-husband is a heavy tenor player, fwiw... Quote
B. Goren. Posted July 27, 2006 Author Report Posted July 27, 2006 (edited) I think that she is a wonderful pianist. I think that this album is especially great. Tune No. 7 on this CD is called *Telavivision* and Joanne Brackeen wrote it after visiting my home town (Tel Aviv). Edited July 27, 2006 by B. Goren. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 Joanne was on most of Freddie McCoy's albums for Prestige in the '60s, starting with "Funk drops", and was on the original version of "One cylinder". A very nice, sympathetic, player. I'll play a couple of them later. Happy birthday Joanne. MG Quote
paul secor Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 (edited) When I read she was 68, I was reminded (again) that I'm getting up there too. Anyway, belated happy birthday wishes to Joanne Brackeen. Edited July 27, 2006 by paul secor Quote

We all have our different perceptions, which is fine. I have not heard her "pound", either live or on several albums--both solo and as sideperson. For example, on Stan Getz's 50th birthday double album, with the gold cover (what is that title!) she plays the smoothest electric piano I have heard anyone play. I hope to avoid her pounding albums--which ones are they? Quote
