skeith Posted July 28, 2006 Author Report Posted July 28, 2006 Doesn't anyone want to talk about the PRESTIGE box for Christ sake? It only has Bud Powell, JJ Johnson, Gene Ammons..... Quote
BruceH Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 Strange, I never forget how bad Kenny G is. (Really, REALLY bad.) You have my unmitigated sympathy. I don't know how bad he is. I've never knowingly heard him. MG Thanks. Actually, I only "knowingly" heard his stuff a couple times, once in a music store, once in a Borders. (I know Borders sells CD's too, but I don't think of it as a music chain.) In both cases I asked someone who worked there what they were playing over the sound-system, and found out it was Kenny G. It really did sound like some sort of muzak-from-Hell. Quote
BruceH Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 I wish Verve would reissue the Sonny Stitt album with Oscar Peterson, that one is a definite keeper. I used to have the old CD version but one of my ex-girlfriends snagged it. I wish they would reissue it too because---hey wait a minute!! You had a girlfriend who was into jazz???? Quote
jazzbo Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 I'd talk about it S, but I haven't yet received it. There was some sort of glitch on my preorder. I have most of it on other cds. As you imply, great flipping music! If the recent box sets from Concord are an indication, this will be a great set. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 I bet it was the SUPER one . . . . Duh Has this wandered in from "take three names"? Or "sexy album sleeves"? MG Quote
BruceH Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 I can't help wondering if Sonny Stitt went to Hell for being so very, very bad. Quote

BruceH Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 Indeed, as I wrote that I was reminded of the old notion of the best musicians, singers, writers, artists, and entertainers going to "Hell" and having a grand ol' time, while the boring, self-rightous twits go to "Heaven." Of course, then you'd need a second, REAL bad Hell for the likes of Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, David Addington, etc. Quote

Not even rubbish musicians go to hell. Well, maybe Wagner... MG Quote

As you imply, great flipping music! If the recent box sets from Concord are an indication, this will be a great set. Looking forward to your comments Lon. While this one is also remastered by Joe Tarantino who did such a great job on the Bill Evans Village Vanguard sessions, the liner notes say that these sessions predated the use of magnetic tape and so were recorded on to disc and that none of those discs survived, so these were made from "subsequent tape transfers" and so alas while there is some improvement over previous versions I have owned, this ain't audiophile stuff. Best regards, S Quote
David Ayers Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 You had a girlfriend??? [Apologies for continuing to mess up this thread.] Quote
JSngry Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 Let me see if I got this straight - Sonny Stitt acted bad once, so his girlfriend threw him out and he had to live in a box for awhile, and now everybody's forgotten about it except Concord? That's one helluva story! Quote
Brad Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 Great box set so far. Listened to most of two discs. What I found strange and I haven't looked at the liners is how the two takes of Afternoon in Paris sound differently. BTW, at the DJ Lounge is one of my favorite Sonnys. Have it in both LP and Cd. Spontooneous Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 Gee whiz. Concord just sent me a promo copy of the box. I'd just like to take this opportunity to say that Concord is the greatest company in the history of the world. And those Debby Boone CDs kick ass. Quote
Spontooneous Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 Just heard Disc One. Is it my stressed-out state of mind, or are there some serious speed/pitch fluctuations in some of these transfers? Quote

Ron S Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 Yup, I missed that. Which makes your accurate and insightful analysis of the situation all the more impressive. Quote
