JSngry Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 Yeah, Ernie. Griff's on another Gee side, right? My bad. No, I guess not. Don't know what I'm thinking about. Some Atlantic side, probably with neither Griff nor Gee. Oh well... Quote

Larry Kart Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 Ernie Henry is in good form too. He's on the quintet tracks. It's Frank Foster on tenor, not Griffin, on the septet tracks. Only slight drawback is pianist Joe Knight, who can be a bit obvious as a comper, but again that's slight. The lively rawness of this date is rather un-Riverside-ish, but I see that it was produced by Keepnews AND Bill Grauer, which may account for that. Also, there's a nice, of the period, chart on Gee's original "Gee!" -- airy voicings reminisicent of Quincy Jones when he was still alert and relatively honest musically. Quote

JSngry Posted September 7, 2006 Report Posted September 7, 2006 That John Dennis side is pretty impressive. That cat was serious. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 7, 2006 Report Posted September 7, 2006 NO kidding. I have always loved that session in the Debut box. Quote
Ron S Posted September 7, 2006 Report Posted September 7, 2006 NO kidding. I have always loved that session in the Debut box. What a co-ink-a-dink: I happen to be listening to that portion of the Debut box right this second! Quote
JSngry Posted September 8, 2006 Report Posted September 8, 2006 Jaki Byard - Freedom Together. What a nifty little collection of pure, naturally idiosyncratic music with absolutely zero commercial potential, even by jazz standards. And Byard on tenor is icing on the naturally idiosyncratic cake. Although, it wasn't the Junior Parker I was expecting, but hey. Yet another surprise. Totally cool stuff probably doomed to be ignored forever, even for $3.00. C'est la fukkin' vie... Quote

jazzbo Posted September 8, 2006 Report Posted September 8, 2006 Junior Parker is ON that cd as a vocalist on a few tracks. I think he means he got a different type of Parker performance than he expected. That IS a neat cd. Richard Davis does some astounding work on that one! Quote
JSngry Posted September 8, 2006 Report Posted September 8, 2006 It's a totally different Junior Parker. This is definitely not the guy who sang "Driving Wheel". How cool would that have been, to have had that Junior Parker singing "Getting To Know You" with this group? WAY cool, that's how cool! But this too is cool. Quote

jazzbo Posted September 8, 2006 Report Posted September 8, 2006 Ha. Should have realized it was a different Junior. I just hadn't realized that for some reason. Quote
T.D. Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 I've been enjoying the heck out of the two Don Ewell releases (Free and Easy and Music to Listen to Don Ewell By). Quote
jazzbo Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 YES, those are both great releases, have had them for some time. Ewell is one of those guys who has never disappointed me. Quote
mikeweil Posted September 10, 2006 Report Posted September 10, 2006 This one has been mentioned before, but I recommend it again: Very nice to hear Basie sideman Al Aarons on the first date! That's a great one! Roy Haynes plays killer groove on the second session here! Quote
T.D. Posted September 11, 2006 Report Posted September 11, 2006 NO kidding. I have always loved that session [John Dennis piano trio w. Mingus, Roach] in the Debut box. New Piano Expressions also includes some solo tracks, which the tray card says aren't included in the Debut box. The solo stuff is excellent, particularly if you like "classically-influenced" playing. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 11, 2006 Report Posted September 11, 2006 Thanks, I didn't realize that. Quote

Matthew Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 I've opened about ten of my order so far, and the one I've had the most fun listening to is Al Sears: Swing's The Thing. What a wonderful session, just old school swing, played in a nice, relaxed manner. Mr. Sears has payed attention to the way Johnny Hodges plays, that's for sure. I play it all the time now. Quote
GA Russell Posted September 16, 2006 Report Posted September 16, 2006 Dom Um Romao - Hotmosphere This was recorded for Pablo in 1976. It's a solid little record, what might be called a party album. Brazilian music, heavy on the percussion and horns. No ballads, all uptempo. The band is 18 members, though maybe not all at the same time, plus three female vocalists. The musicians include Claludio Roditi, Sonny Fortune, Ronnie Cuber, Lou Del Gatto and Ron Carter. Not five star, but a pleasant change of pace from what all else is available from the Prestige and Riverside recordings included in the sale. Quote
sal Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 Another discovery for me.....the second session on Miles Davis' "Collecters Items" with Sonny Rollins in the quintet. A gem of session. The group sounds really tight. Was this group touring together at the time? It sounds like it. Quote
