birdanddizzy Posted July 12, 2006 Report Posted July 12, 2006 Hi, Where can I find a recording of Louis Armstrong with the "5 & 7" ? Is it only on records and can also be found on CD ? Thanks Steven Quote
paul secor Posted July 12, 2006 Report Posted July 12, 2006 You can pick up either the Complete Hot 5's and 7's on Columbia or Hot 5's and 7's on JSP - remastered by John R.T. Davies. Some people prefer one over the other, but both are fine. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 12, 2006 Report Posted July 12, 2006 Columbia also has single cds reissuing th Hot 5s and Hot 7s as an alternative to the box set. Quote
AllenLowe Posted July 12, 2006 Report Posted July 12, 2006 don't forget 6 & 8 - they're kinda like listening to Beethoven's 10th - Quote
Hot Ptah Posted July 13, 2006 Report Posted July 13, 2006 I always liked 2 the best (Weather Bird, with just Louis and Earl Hines). Quote

DMP Posted July 16, 2006 Report Posted July 16, 2006 A question about that "JSP" reissue (which I finally picked up).... I've read many times about the superior sound of this, but what source is this material "remastered" from? Wouldn't Columbia (or Sony) have the original recordings? In other words, remastered from what?? Quote
medjuck Posted July 16, 2006 Report Posted July 16, 2006 My guess is they've used 78s from private collections that were in excellent condition. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 16, 2006 Report Posted July 16, 2006 From 78s is the likeliest source. Yes, Columbia has metal parts, test pressings, etc. and J. R. T. had a hand in a small part of the remastering of that set as well if memory serves. I prefer the Columbia sound. . . but it's sort of system dependent and according to tastes. The booklet on the Columbia is part of the price of course (and has some incredible photos etc. within!) Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 16, 2006 Report Posted July 16, 2006 The JSP set was remastered in the late '80s. The sound is fine but not to the level of work he was doing by the end of his life. Quote
