Jazztropic Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 Have " Side by Side" and" Back To Back" love them! What are some other favorite Hodges and Ellington cds? Quote
Shawn Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 There's probably 1000 more discs out there with them together. You HAVE to get this one....all-time classic: Hodges, Ellington...and Bean = KILLER Quote
Guy Berger Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 There's some incredible Hodges on the Ellington disc ...And His Mother Called Him Bill. Guy Quote

A hot night last night with no A/C and I put that on last night. Sigh...I had intended to play Afro Bossa instead but switched over to your suggestion as I love that album so. Far East Suite too. And many more from many years earlier. Sorry to OP Jazztropic if he knows all this and instead is looking for smaller group recs like Back To Back (a favorite of mine too.) Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 Squatty Roo (1940(?) small group). Quote
jazzbo Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 There are SO MANY .. . really Hodges in any Ellington situation was remarkably consistently great. Favorites of mine are the Columbia labels and the RCA small group sides. Killer stuff for all concerned. And I really like the use of Hodges in "Anatomy of a Murder" and "Such Suite Thunder." Great writing that is wonderfully executed by Der Rabbit. Quote
robviti Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 another for such sweet thunder and and his mother called him bill. hodges' solo on star-crossed lovers on the first disc is wonderful, as is his emotional reading of blood count on the latter recording (made shortly after strayhorn's passing.) jlhoots Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 (edited) Duke's In Bed (of course, no Ellington on that one except what I presume are Duke's slippers on the cover). Edited June 28, 2006 by jlhoots Quote
jazzbo Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 Probably a pair of slippers the lp photographer rounded up somewhere! Quote
BruceH Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 Another vote for Such Sweet Thunder, ...And His Mother Called Him Bill, and Anatomy Of A Murder. Hard to go wrong with anything, though. Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 'Blues for New Orleans' from the New Orleans Suite is pretty heavy (and sadly, as late as late Hodges gets). Quote

I'll have to give it another spin though, it's been a few years since I've listened to it. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 "Limbo Jazz" is the one everyone loves! Give it another shot. . . it's all good. Quote

Actually, I had the opportunity to listen this afternoon. Still no-go for me on the Limbo jazz, but there is some lovely playing on the album. Hawk on 'Mood Indigo' more than makes up for the Limbo stuff, I guess. But boy, that Limbo riff is going to be stuck in my head the rest of the day Quote
