Bol
Am I right in thinking that this is a straight re-issue of the Japanese 20-bit K2 release? Thanks in advance for your response.
jazzbo
I'm curious too. Would seem likely, though it's not entirely straight as the Japanese set had three cds, one set per cd. They are combined here on two cds. Exellent music!
Dmitry
This set has been discussed before.
jazzbo
This set has been discussed before. Yes, but as far as I can tell no one has really answered the mastering/straight copy question!
CJ Shearn
really Lon? I had no idea this set leaned the other way I have yet to purchase this set also
Ron S
Someone is about to answer this question authoritatively, so listen up. I just got off the phone with Joe Tarantino, who remastered this new set for Fantasy/Concord (and he is credited for this on the label). He confirmed that this is, indeed, a new remastering, and NOT the Japanese 20-bit K2, and that this one was done in 24-bit. By the way, I also asked him about the new Bill Evans Vanguard box, which also credits him with remastering, and he confirmed that it, too, is a new remastering, and NOT the 20-bit-K2 remastered box previously issued in Japan. I've called Joe in the past with questions, and he has always been very helpful. I'm glad to see that even with the Concord acquisition, he's still there. Bol
Thanks so much for a very helpful answer. I wish it was a straight re-issue of the 20-bit K2, as I am a big fan of that format.
Ron S
You should give this one a chance. IMHO, Joe did a great job improving on the 20-bit K2 remastering of the Bill Evans Vanguard recordings, as I discussed here.
jazzbo
Thanks Ron! Now call Kirk Felton up and ask him. . . . NAH, just kidding.
Ron S
That's OK, Lon--I've already asked Kirk the question you wanted answered. He said that yes, absolutely, your stereo system is better than any other he's ever heard.

Son-of-a-Weizen
Ron, is he still on hold???? Please ask him to try to work some magic over there and see if they can't come out with a re-mastered 'Shelly Manne & His Men @ The Blackhawk' box!! That would be sweeeeeet! Ron S
I'm not sure how much better those can get! Every time I listen to those, I'm amazed at how fabulous they sound.
medjuck
I'm not sure how much better those can get! Every time I listen to those, I'm amazed at how fabulous they sound. Right, but a box set in chronological order would be nice. (And I don't have every volume yet.)

The Magnificent Goldberg
Can someone PLEASE say what the catalogue number of this set is - there seem to be two in the Concord catalogue and I don't know which is the complete set (or if they're different and I need to buy both). I just saw the Evans set at Borders today, and the outer box says "20-bit K2". Is that a misprint? Or did Tarantino do a new remaster using the same technology? By the way, Lon, who is that fetching woman whose picture you put up?
