This Palo Alto side just was re-released. It's a session from 1981 w/Jimmy Rowles, George Mraz and Billy Hart. I give it a hearty recommendation, two thumbs up! "Three Little Words" smokes, as does "Pent-up House". Pepper is such a monster- I first heard him on The Cooker and then the Thad and Mel stuff. Did you know that he even did a short stint w/the Kenton band?

Where is the info for this reissue? Is it on CD? Import or domestic? I've had this on LP for a while and the playing is very good but the sound off the vinyl leaves a bit to be desired.

EDIT>> I see it now listed at Tower Records. I don't usually go there and Dusty Groove doesn't even mention it. It's on the want list! :)

Later,

Kevin

I picked this up when I got the RVGs. When he recorded this, he hadn't lost a thing. Three Little Words is good but my favorite is the title track and Dexter Rides Again (and no, not for the obvious reason; it's just a great track). His sound is like no other bari player I've heard. I give this a hearty recommendation.

In fact, I just got out his recording on Mode (since reissued by VSOP) and that's great as well. Stu Williamson really caught my attention on this one.

Agreed, Brad. Adams sounds in top form here. What did he die of, anyway, cancer? Every Pepper Adams album I've heard so far has been good, but the Mode/VSOP one is really great. Sometimes I wonder why he isn't more famous, as he's got to be one of the 4 or 5 best baritone sax players in all of jazz (I'd say one of the top three, but I'm trying to be objective).

While you're on the CD Universe site, click on *Quicksilver* and check out the David Friesen disc available in a couple of days. Looks interesting - I remember playing the vinyl on my radio program years ago but don't remember the recording at all. Does anyone else?

I spoke to the guy who owns Quicksilver and he is one odd character. Got me flustered to the point where I didn't follow through to purchase any of his product. I called him re. Lanny Morgan's great Palo Alto recording "It's About Time" with a stellar cast that includes Bruce Forman. He didn't seem to be too interested in reissuing this one, but who knows, maybe down the line he will.
