JSngry Posted June 14, 2006 Report Posted June 14, 2006 I kid you not - this is some hip shit! What Shinichi Osawa does with "Never Can Say Goodbye" is worth the cost of admission alone. You could (mostly) do that arrangement live and fuck some people up. But there's more, much more. I only wish that more remix projects came out this well. Hey. the Jackson 5 were cool, and this is too. Temporarily out of stock at Da'Bastids: http://www.dustygroove.com/cgi-sys/cgiwrap...22&issearch=yes I'm just now discovering that Japan's got some hip shit going on in the remix department. And some not so hip. But the best of it is quite creative & musical. I'm in. Quote
JSngry Posted June 15, 2006 Author Report Posted June 15, 2006 Don/t know, don't have it yet. Don't know if it would be as good as the Jackson 5 thing. I mean, the Jackson 5 are one thing, but JB, man, that's a whole 'nother thing... Quote

JSngry Posted June 15, 2006 Author Report Posted June 15, 2006 The thing that makes the J5 remixes so much fun is that it's remixes of old (but great) pop stuff that I've heard so often as to have had enough redone in fresh, interesting, creative (at times very) ways that make it sound new again. To me, that's the ultimate creative goal of any remix. JB. otoh, still sounds fresh, interesting, creative (at times very), and new to me in its original form. The J5 made great pop music. JB was a freakin' force of nature. Big difference. Still, these J5 remixes are kicking my ass going on 3 days now. Fun stuff. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 28, 2006 Report Posted June 28, 2006 Okay the J5 stuff is going to start kicking my ass. I'm enjoying it. I'll be spinning it more this week. First time through Helen and I sat around and then sort of twitched around listening and we BOTH dug it. Some cool stuff going on there! (And Monday too!) Quote
JSngry Posted June 28, 2006 Author Report Posted June 28, 2006 Yeah, the freshness of these things is what is (still!) getting me. I've heard so many pop "remixes" that amount to little more than stretching out a song with empty filler and "tricks" like that that the term "remix" is one that I've come to greet with a big "fuck that". But this stuff more often than not is a wholesale reworking of the songs themeleves. New arrangements, rephrasings of vocals, damn near everything. Damn creative, and most importantly, musical work by all concerned! Can't say that I plan on diving headfirst into remixology, but I will say that it's a treat to hear something that's so technology-based that comes out a winner on the music. Definitely interested in hearing more things that do that! Quote
JSngry Posted June 29, 2006 Author Report Posted June 29, 2006 Just got the EW&F remixes. Very interesting... Quote

JSngry Posted June 29, 2006 Author Report Posted June 29, 2006 Just got the EW&F remixes. Very interesting... Which EW&F did you get? Undergroove Collection, or one of the others? Anyone heard the J5 volume 2? Yeah, Undergroove. Only I got it as part of a UK two-CD set from Dutty Goove. It was $16.99 and in stock. Undergroove's $26.99 and out of stock. So for $10 less, I got a "best of" type CD + a $27 remix CD. Heckuva deal. Haven't heard/gotten the J5 V2, but have a request in at da' Bastids. I'll be carpe dieming like a mug if and when it gets back in stock. Them's some good vittles. BTW - what's a serious jazz tenorist such as yourself doing listening to remix collections? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 FYI, here's some audio-clips (real-player) for both volumes of the Jackson Five remix discs (well, volume one anyway - now that I look). http://www.universal-music.co.jp/polydor/a...kson5/1220.html Quote

JSngry Posted June 30, 2006 Author Report Posted June 30, 2006 I don't think I qualify as a serious jazz musician either. I like dance music, I'm intrigued by hip-hop/electronica production techniques, I enjoy vocals (well, some of 'em), I don't mind talking to an audience, and I don't mind playing requests (well, some of 'em). Guess I'm a muddle-headed sellout. Oh well! Quote
jazzbo Posted June 30, 2006 Report Posted June 30, 2006 (edited) Sellout? Not really. . . just enjoying and being open? Muddleheaded? NOT ON THIS BOARD. Thanks for sharing "new directions in music." Edited June 30, 2006 by jazzbo Quote

JSngry Posted August 27, 2006 Author Report Posted August 27, 2006 Just got the EW&F remixes. Very interesting... Which EW&F did you get? Undergroove Collection, or one of the others? Yeah, Undergroove. Only I got it as part of a UK two-CD set from Dutty Goove. It was $16.99 and in stock. Undergroove's $26.99 and out of stock. So for $10 less, I got a "best of" type CD + a $27 remix CD. Heckuva deal. Ok, I was wrong. What I got was something else entirely. Still by Soul Source, but actual remixes. Undergroove is essentially a compilation featuring the "jazzier" side of EW&F, with just a few, non-radical, remixes. It's a good set, but if you were into EW&F back in the day and bought/heard all the albums, there's no real reason to pick this up, especially at J-prices. I learned this the hard way this past week... The remixes, otoh, are fresh and invigorating. The original Soul Source Japanese album is another, more radical (and interesting) thing altogether. It's also pricier than hell. So that "Essential" collection that I got is definitely the way to go if you want to get this stuff. The order is different, and there's a remix of "After The Love Has Gone" that's been replaced by something else, but big whoop. Quote

JSngry Posted October 7, 2006 Author Report Posted October 7, 2006 volume II is no joke, either. i've had these, and others in the series, for a long time... -e- Now back in stock at Da' Bastids: Volume 1 of the J5 remixes: http://www.dustygroove.com/warehouscd3.htm#37799 Volume 2 of the J5 remixes: http://www.dustygroove.com/warehouscd3.htm#47202 And these two further items which may be of interest: Remixes of older soul and groove classics -- done in a style that we really really love! The package was put together by the genre-crossing geniuses at Japan's Soul Source -- and it takes catchy tracks from previous years and pumps them up for the dancefloor -- in a mode that's similar to Soul Source's remix projects of work by Jackson Five, James Brown, and Earth Wind & Fire! There's 13 titles on the set, all nice and long -- and tracks include "Always There (Ashley Beedle's re-edit)" by Side Effect mixed by Ashley Beedle, "Come With Me (Eddy Meets Yannah Adria mix)" by Tania Maria, "Tombo In 7/4 (Music Overlaps)" reorchestrated by Free Tempo, "Don't Be Blue (Routine Jazz Jazztronica mix)" by Jackie & Roy remixed by Kei Kobayashi, "Freedom Jazz Dance (Jumpin Needle mix)" by Woody Herman remixed by Monday Michiru, "School Boy Crush (DJ Mitsu the Beats rmx)" by Average White Band, "Straight Ahead (Kyoto Jazz Massive rmx)" by Pleasure, and "I Need You (Dim's Sunday morning mix)" by Sylvester remixed by Dimitri From Paris. I have it, and it is for the most part excellent. The Monday thing is really, really interesting an interweaving of a tricked up take of the Herman band's original interspersed w/her densely layered vocals and an extended live solo section by Alex Sipiagin on trumpet and Scot Colley on bass playing along with a track that Monday constructed out of the Herman original. It would be a gimmick if there wasn't some musicality going on in all of this (and it could still be a gimmick even if there was...). But this works as music, period. Bigtime. Kinda hard for me to get excited about more reissues of stuff I've heard for more than half my life when there's this type of music being made today... Older classics, beautifully reworked -- all given the Soul Source touch here -- in a way that takes the classic grooves and works them out nicely for a modern dancefloor! The Soul Source approach is one that always goes a lot deeper than the usual "oldies plus beats" mode -- really working with the tunes at a level that understands them, and preserves the best elements while bringing completely new references into play. There's a wonderfully eclectic batch of grooves here -- and titles include "Novo Ano (Toshio Matsuura rmx)" by Azar Lawrence, "Los Conquistadores Chocolates (Dim's super jizzco bakes)" by Johnny Hammond Smith, "What You Won't Do For Love (Eddy Meets Yannah rmx)" by Bobby Caldwell, "Am I The Same Girl (Local People rmx)" by Barbara Acklin, "I Feel Like Dancing (Joey Negro club)" by Jeanie Tracy, "Venus (Yukihiro Fukutomi rmx)" by Shocking Blue, "That's What Friends Are For (Danny Krivit re-edit)" by Madeline Bell, and "Work To Do (Soul Source production mix)" by Average White Band. Had to order this one. Expecting more goodness, as well as another great cover (which may or may not have anything to do with "super jizzco bakes".... If interested is piqued, carpe diem. I've had Volume 2 of the J5 on DG's "Notify" list for more than a few months now and it just came in. Quote
jazzbo Posted October 7, 2006 Report Posted October 7, 2006 Bet that is some good stuff. The Monday remix of the Herman is da shitte times two, really a great piece of work by all concerned! Quote
