Rooster_Ties Posted June 13, 2006 Report Posted June 13, 2006 (edited) Just saw this in the cut-out rack at a local shiny-disc emporium (while I was out at lunch). For $2 or $3 I wouldn't have thought twice. For $8 - I thought I'd at least check the AMG review, and while I'm at it - here's a thread for others to chime in too. Yngwie Malmsteen - Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E Flat Minor Op. 1 <-- FWIW, this AMG review is generally positive (with a number of caveats). I think my wife will get a kick out of this, as she's a bit of a Metallica fan (believe it or not), and weird classical music hybrids can often be fun (IMHO). Found a couple clips on Youtube too... Clip #1: Yngwie Malmsteen - Concerto Suite For Electric Guitar Clip #2: Yngwie Malmsteen - Icarus Dream Fanfare with Orchestra Opinions?? Edited June 13, 2006 by Rooster_Ties Quote
Claude Posted June 13, 2006 Report Posted June 13, 2006 (edited) AMG says: "After toiling with classical references in his music for most of his career, guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen finally dedicated himself to writing a concerto for electric guitar. The combination is not unique, as several rock groups, including Metallica, have been backed by full orchestras, but this is the first work of its kind to feature the electric guitar as the lead instrument in a concerto." The reviewer forgot Terje Rypdal, who has composed and played concerto-like works for electric guitar and orchestra, some before Malmsteen's op.1. - Undisonus (1990): http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:60zsa93gy23u - Q.E.D. JSngry Posted June 13, 2006 Report Posted June 13, 2006 Hell, it's a Concerto Suite. Not too many of those around. Quote
Shawn Posted June 13, 2006 Report Posted June 13, 2006 Not surprising that it's in E Flat Minor since that's the only key he can solo over. Quote

Yeah, Eb minor is not much of a "guitar" key unless he's tuning down a half step. I like early Yngvie from the mid-'80s but not the recent material. Too much shred. Quote
Kyo Posted June 15, 2006 Report Posted June 15, 2006 I bought this back when I was still new to the whole shred thing. It's incredibly boring. Stay away from it! Quote

Yeah, I took a look at those Youtube clips, and kinda thought the same thing. Never went back and bought it after all, and probably won't. Quote
