Soul Stream Posted June 12, 2006 Report Posted June 12, 2006 (edited) Dr. Lonnie Smith - Jungle Soul (click to buy) July 11th.....shit, that's too damn far away! Edited June 19, 2006 by Jim Alfredson Quote
Soul Stream Posted June 12, 2006 Author Report Posted June 12, 2006 Ain't it? Love it. When I saw Lonnie a few weeks ago, he played a number of tunes from the CD. Including the title cut (a super funk homerun), Willow Weep For Me (6/8 charger) and one of his original ballads which was really beautiful. This album is gonna be great, can't wait. Release of the year for me. Quote

Sundog Posted July 16, 2006 Report Posted July 16, 2006 I've spun this one three times now and I have to say I'm a bit underwhelmed. Nice arrangements of old material for the most part and some interesting new songs with nice textures; but if your looking for another "Too Damn Hot" (which I wasn't BTW) this isn't it. Peter Bernstein, who I like very much, really doesn't add all that much to this release. The most interesting guitarist on the album is the producer Matt Balitsaris who adds some nice textures to the "jungle" music. All that said, I think the new material has some interesting possibilities and I wouldn't be at all surprised if it really "smokes" in a live setting. Quote
kh1958 Posted July 17, 2006 Report Posted July 17, 2006 I have a more positive reaction--maybe not overall as good as Too Damn Hot, but Trouble Man, Jungle Soul, Witch Doctor, and Zimbabwe sound mighty good to me. Quote
bertrand Posted July 17, 2006 Report Posted July 17, 2006 Is 'Witch Doctor' the Lee Morgan tune? Bertrand. Quote
kh1958 Posted July 17, 2006 Report Posted July 17, 2006 Is 'Witch Doctor' the Lee Morgan tune? Bertrand. It's credited to Lonnie Smith and "Gasperini." Zimbabwe is indeed "Too Damn Hot." Quote

Soul Stream Posted August 22, 2006 Author Report Posted August 22, 2006 If you haven't hear this recording, then I feel bad for you. Dr. Lonnie continues to amaze and inspire. Bringing organ jazz to new heights again and again. Quote
