Thanks, Rupe Roscoe Mitchell is going to play at the Hot House (36 E. Balbo) Friday after all the Grant Park activities. Also, the Jazz Showcase and Velvet Lounge always host after fest jam sessions the entire weekend. Not sure if you are familiar with these venues, but if your tastes are more of the mainstream, straight ahead stuff, the Jazz Showcase will suit nicely, as Ira Sullivan always hosts some great jam sessions. If your tastes are more towards the avant garde, the Velvet will work for you. Some great players have shown up to these jam sessions hosted by the great Fred Anderson. Quote

Lazaro Vega Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Posted at the Jazz Fest web site August 27, 2006 Jazz Fest starts in just four days with a ticketed performance at Symphony Center. But if you just can't wait (or don't want to pay for a seat), you can get a taste of what's to come at 5 p.m. on Thursday with a free discussion and performance at the Chicago Cultural Center's Preston Bradley Hall. Larry Kart, former Chicago Tribune jazz critic and author of Jazz In Search Of Itself, will join this year’s Chicago Jazz Festival Artist-in-Residence Lee Konitz in a discussion of Konitz’s long and fabled career. Konitz will follow the discussion with a rare solo saxophone performance. Born in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood in 1927, Konitz has performed with an almost endless list of jazz greats, including Stan Kenton, Lennie Tristano, Warne Marsh, and Miles Davis. He is famous for his fearless improvisatory attitude and individual style of playing the alto saxophone. Konitz will also appear at the Chicago Jazz Festival on Saturday afternoon (Jazz on Jackson stage) leading a group of Workshop musicians, and on Sunday evening (Petrillo Bandshell) fronting his New Nonet. sal Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 It seems like there will be quite a few of us Organissimo folks at the Hot House on Friday night. I know sheldonm will be there, as perhaps will jazzshrink (if he's not at the hotel taking a power nap). Should be fun! Quote
Larry Kart Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Anyone who will be at the Konitz thing at the Cultural Center and that I don't already know, please say hello afterwards if you want to. Quote
sal Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 I wish I could make it to your session with Lee Konitz, Larry. Unfortunately, due to both my job and my new residence out in Aurora, I'm not going to be able to make it into the city until Friday night. Hope to see you around the Jazz Fest! Quote
Joe G Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Anyone heard from Mr. Nessa lately? Wonder if he's coming down. Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Chuck is on vacation this week, but mentioned he might try to get into Chicago this Friday especially to see Roscoe at Hot House. Quote
EKE BBB Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 That probably was Fredrik Ljungkvist. He's blond and Swedish. Saw him with Atomic last month I was favorably impressed by his playing. Quote
Joe G Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Most of us are enroute or will be shortly. Safe journey everyone, and I'll be keeping an eye out for you! Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Are there any radio broadcasts of the Festival, and if so, are any of them web broadcasts? I know that the Festival was broadcast in the past, as I've seen tapes of various artists in various years circulating. Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 (edited) A couple of years ago, or maybe more, WBEZ stopped producing the live national broadcast of the Chicago Jazz Festival and made available to NPR stations 13 one hour programs culled from the jazz fest performances and interviews. The immediacy of the live broadcast, it's ability to unite the jazz community and the country in a end of summer ritual, was more appealing to me as a jazz director. Needless to say what was a Labor Day weekend special for years and years, able to pre-empt all programming on Blue Lake except "A Prarie Home Companion," went away when they broke it up into a post produced series. Many of our listeners were dissappointed the live broadcast was kaput, and I'm sorry to say they were in the national minority according to the radio professionals who carried the day. Jim Alfredson Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 We had a lot of fun and met some fellow forum members, including Mark Sheldon, jazzshrink, Rupert Da Cat, and mgraham (I probably forgot someone... if so, sorry!) The organ was kinda whack (that's usually how it goes at these things) but it worked out fine. I'm home for a few hours after playing with Root Doctor at the Detroit International Jazz Festival before headlining the REO Town Festival here in Lansing with Root Doctor. Then it's off to Detroit to play with organissimo tomorrow evening. Saw Frank Malfitano today and hopefully I'll hook up with Mitchell Feldman, our radio man, tomorrow. He just got in from Atlanta to Detroit. Fun weekend! Quote
sal Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 Had a really nice couple of days down at the Jazz Festival! Got to the city on Friday night and met up with sheldonm, jazzshrink, rachel and Joe G at the HotHouse for Roscoe Mitchell's show. He put on a great show. There were moments in the first set where he seemed a bit tired but the second set he just killed it. Lots of brilliant improvisation and moments of peak intensity. I headed back down on Saturday for the Grant Park festivities, and we got to see the Dana Hall Quintet, featuring Tim Warfield, Steve Wilson, Ron Perillo and Dennis Carol. They played mostly Dana Hall original compositions, and the band sounded excellent. They are coming out with an album this fall, so really looking forward to that. Afterwards, I caught Jason Moran and the Bandwagon w/ special guest Bunky Green on alto. Another excellent show. Bunky fit in really nicely the Bandwagon, and the show was full of energy. The Joe Lovano Nonet closed off the show with a hard swinging, brilliant show, where they played tracks of of the new Nonet album "Streams of Expression". Its was my first time seeing Lovano, and I enjoyed his stage presence as well as the playing of him and his excellent band. Almost as good as the music and the company was the abslutely beautiful weather. This weekend has been in the mid seventies and mostly sunny the entire time! Wish I could make it out tonight to see Willie Pickens' birthday celebration as well as Joey D and Dr. Lonnie Smith. Hopefully someone will report back about how those shows were. Quote
