slide_advantage_redoux
Ohio Foundry Worker Killed in Steel Pit By Associated Press Thu Jun 8, 10:20 PM CANTON, Ohio - A foundry worker was killed Thursday when he fell into an industrial pit and was covered in molten steel, authorities said. Gordon Hickman, 41, was operating a massive ladle near the rim of the 35-foot pit just before noon when he fell into it, moments before the 2,600-degree steel was poured in, said Battalion Chief John Whitlatch of the Canton Fire Department. A second employee at United Foundries Inc. suffered first- and second-degree burns over 20 percent of his body when went into the pit to try to save Hickman, Whitlatch said. The unidentified worker escaped the roughly 15-by-20-foot pit just as the steel was being poured. It wasn't clear whether Hickman, of Homeworth, was killed by the fall or survived until the steel was poured. Whitlatch said the pour could not have been stopped in time. Officials will have to wait several days until the steel cools to retrieve Hickman's remains. The foundry produces large iron rollers used by steel mills. The company also has plants in Youngstown and South Africa. OUCH
Man with the Golden Arm
Yipes ... My HOMETOWN!! For a college photography project I visited a small steel mill up in Akron a couple of times in the middle of the night - as that was the only time they were smelting and pouring. That place was something out of a Bosch painting and those guys in there are something else. Damn nasty way to go.
Son-of-a-Weizen
<<<several days until the steel cools to retrieve Hickman's remains.>>> So how do you do that? I used to go up to Beth Steel at Sparrows Point... fascinating process....but like MWGA said, 'Bosch'like and no margin for error.
Big Al
My dad used to work as an engineer at a steel mill when I was a kid. This happening to him was my biggest nightmare. My heart goes out to this man's family. What a horrible grief to bear. Edited June 9, 2006 by Big Al
Jazzmoose
The worst part is that afterwards, they sell your remains to an immense, fat alien who uses you as a room divider until a Jedi shows up...
