Been listenin' to a lot of Kenny lately, without knowing it was his birthday - spooky, huh? Savored disc 1 of the INTRODUCING KENNY BURRELL 2-CD Conn the other night...Burrell in fiery form, with the great added bonus of Kenny Clarke. Also picked up MOTEN SWING! THE COLUMBIA INSTRUMENTAL SESSIONS 1961-2 (Sundazed) and have to say that this is not just good but GREAT Kenny, definitely unjustly neglected work. He's amazing.

I agree wholeheartedly, and I had just posted the same sentiments on the current thread about this session in the discography forum. The old version of these recordings, entitled BLUESIN' AROUND, was always somewhat of a hard-to-find item, especially in CD form (it was issued in europe as part of Henri Renaud's "JAZZOTHEQUE" series put out by Sony).

Happy Birthday Kenny!

I prefer this to obituaries, of which we had far too many this year!

My cuurent Kenny Burrell listening pleasures:

- Blue Note first sessions on Connoisseur 2 CD set (especially the one eith Pettiford and Shadow Wilson, sailing along with the powered elegance of a Rolls Royce)

- the Euphoria CD with the Columbia instrumental sides

- the Village Vanguard trios with Richard Davis and Roy Haynes (A completed reissue of this great music would have been an appropriate birthday present for Universal to make! )

Never heard him play a wrong note. Always soulful, always elegant swing. One of the true giants. Live long and in peace!

I've also been enjoying the recently acquired "Moten Swing" reissue. When I think of favorite Kenny I always think of "Why Was I Born" off the Coltrane/Burrell.

I've been listening to "Blue Bash" quite a lot recently. Man, his TONE on that thing is sooooo bad (not to mention his playing!)

I listening to his new Concord CD, Blue Muse, for a review. Sounds pretty nice.

And Euporia's issue last year of his 1961-62 Columbia sessions, Moten Swing!, is mighty fine.

I think I've read that he's done almost 90 solo recordings!

Is that 90 solo recordings or 90 as a leader? I could have sworn I read that he's over 100 as a leader, but 90 sounds ridiculous for solo guitar!
