alocispepraluger102 Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 (edited) a generation ago, i heard a public broadcasting tape of a live gig by amina claudine myers, during which she performed an extended performance of her 'song for mother e', including a very long impassioned piano solo. this performance showed an absolutely breathtaking combination of skill, taste, anger, and love. talk about power and feeling and technique. someday i hope to find a recording of this or a similar performance. JSngry Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 Have you heard the album of the same name? It's a duet w/Pheeroan ak Laff and is one of the great "unknown" (to the "general jazz public") organ albums. It's Leo LR 100 on LP. Don't know if it's been reissued on CD yet. Quote

JSngry Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 Amina's been very low-profile for the last 15 years or so, and her last leader dates (that I know of) were the ill-concieved "pop" dates for Novus (classic - epitomic, perhaps - examples of how, no, it's NOT easy to make good pop records, and how, yes, production DOES matter), but in the 80s she was unquestionably one of the most vital voices in the music. No reason to believe, until otherwise proven, that she still isn't, "profile" or not. Quote

alocispepraluger102 Posted May 28, 2006 Author Report Posted May 28, 2006 does anyone know where she is now, or where she lives? pete fallico, a dj who has a fine website about organists, one being miss myers, knows her well and corresponds with her. he is most cordial and informative. this is his website: http://doodlinlounge.com/index.html Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 She played two nights solo in London a couple of weeks back - I was gigging both nights so couldn't make either show, but would have loved to have seen her. Am I right in thinking she's gigging with Archie Shepp quite regularly now? And I think she may also be on a fairly recent Shepp quartet recording. I wish I could get my mits on a copy of 'Song for Mother E'. All I have is 'Salutes Bessie Smith', Lester Bowie's 'The Fifth Power', and the duets with Muhal. All absolutely wonderful. Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 29, 2006 Report Posted May 29, 2006 She plays on James "Blood" Ullmer's "Blue blood" - Innerhythmic INR005. A great album and Amina's playing is right there. No recording date but the CD is dated 2001. MG Quote
