Bol Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 (edited) I am quite puzzled by Enja. First, it seems that there are two different record companies by that name, both out of Germany. Second, it seems that while many titles are available in Germany, they are not in North America. Am I right in thinking that there is no US distributor? Is there a good way to get Enja CDs? I am particularly interested in Aki Takase CDs on Enja-Weber. Edited May 19, 2006 by Bol Quote

I am particularly interested in Aki Takase CDs on Enja-Weber. From enjarecords.com: Quote In early 1986 Matthias Winckelmann and Horst Weber decided to separate and to work individually from now on. Differing views on work intensity, on "where to take the label" were solved this way. M. W. got even more involved with New York's jazz and produced an average of 30 albums annually on ENJA (Kenny Barron, Ray Anderson, Mitch Watkins, Wayne Krantz, Gary Thomas, Leni Stern, McCoy Tyner, Arthur Blythe, Abdullah Ibrahim, Elvin Jones, Abraham Burton, Maria Schneider Orchestra, Ingrid Jensen, Dan Wall, Lee Konitz, Kevin Mahogany et.al.). I believe they basically split part of the catalog and each continue to sell their portion. Winckelmann's seems to be the more active of the two (?) Horst Weber Enja site Matthias Winckelmann Enja site Appears you can purchase titles from the Winckelmann site, but not the Weber site at the moment. Quote

Well, they split the whole catalog that existed at the time, and continue the same numbering system, but without overlaps, somehow - and they both have individual distribution arrangements. Quote
Nate Dorward Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 Hm, and how does Tutu fit into this picture? My impression was it was somehow related... Quote

Bol Posted May 20, 2006 Author Report Posted May 20, 2006 Thanks for the info. So, does anyone know whether there is a convenient way of getting Enja-Weber CDs in the US? I guess I could order using Amazon.de, but would like to avoid that route since shipping is quite expensive. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 20, 2006 Report Posted May 20, 2006 Didn't Aggie say you could buy directly from MW? Don't know his shipping charges, but check it out. Quote

I am aware the above quote's from Winckelmann's site, but still there's an addition to me made: with discs by Gianluigi Trovesi, Michel Godard, Gabriele Mirabassi, Pino Minafra, Jean-Louis Matinier, and the great 2CD La Banda set and a few others, Enja Winckelmann has also done a great job in documenting some of the more interesting folsky/mediterranean music. Funny also to note that Enja Weber has done Godard discs, too (two duo discs with Dave Bargeron) and that both Weber and Winckelmann did record Charlie Mariano ("Deep in a Dream" on Winckelmann's label is terrific, Sangrey started a thread about it some time ago). I seem to remember that the US outfit Sunnyside did release some Enja discs in the US, no? Quote
