Jazz Groove Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 I heard a few track from this session called My Main Man. Now I am going crazt trying to find this on CD. I would even take an LP of it if I could find it. Any ideas where I might be able to pick this one up? Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 Keep an eye on the Dusty Groove website as well as Euclid Records and ebay. I know I've seen this at the Groove quite recently. Don't think its made it to CD. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 I have this on CD at home but I don't think it was called "My Main Man"... isn't it called "Soul in the Night"?? Is this the session you're talking about? Good date that I miraculously found in the Burlington, MA Tower Records "clearance" bin for around $12. Well worth every penny. BTW, it was released in that same series that gave us Baby Face Willette's "Mo Rock" and "Behind the 8 Ball". These are the CDs with a watermelon motif and "Soul Jazz" written on the inside of the CD behind the clear CD tray. Later, Kevin Quote
jazzbo Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 My Main Man, with Bennie Green. . . I don't believe it has ever been on cd, but I would like to be wrong. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 I have this on CD at home but I don't think it was called "My Main Man"... isn't it called "Soul in the Night"?? not according to AMG (FWIW) Ahhhh! Now I see the confusion! "B Green" in this instance translates to "Bennie Green" not "Bunky Green" like I thought. Pretty funny mix up on my part. In looking at this "My Main Man", it does look like a good one... although the rhythm section is kinda "blah"... Bobby Buster and Dorel Anderson? I betcha Deep has this. He's as much a Stitt fan as I am and even I don't have half the stuff Deep has. Later, Kevin Quote

Jazz Groove Posted July 29, 2003 Author Report Posted July 29, 2003 I heard this one on a college raido station last night it swang. The DJ did state it a Sonny Stitt CD. So I was figuring that it was or is out there on CD. Quote

jazzbo Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 A few tracks have shown up on compilation cds, the one that couw mentions, and also the title track has been on the Chess Jazz Story collection. . . it's possible he was playing from one of these. Or it's possible it has been released in Japan, though I haven't seen this to be the case. Quote
Swinging Swede Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 I had a larger image of it saved. Quote

Brad Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 Aside from the compilation (image posted by Couw), there's not a lot of Sonny's Argo work out on cd. Notable exceptions are Sonny Stitt, Interaction, At the DJ Lounge and Soul in the Night (which is not very good IMHO). I'd love to see My Main Man in cd. Picked up the LP after I heard the few cuts on the compilation. DJ Lounge is a must. It really burns. Quote

Picked up the LP after I heard the few cuts on the compilation. DJ Lounge is a must. It really burns. You know, Brad, after I bought "Soul in the Night" and got home & played it, it stayed in my "trade" pile for a few weeks. One day as I went out the door, I grabbed it and played it in the car. By the time I got home, it still went into the trade pile. A while later, I spun it again... don't remember why... and it just sounded good. I don't think it's "stellar" stuff, just good bluesy soul Jazz. I also think Bunky Green's tone is a bit weird. Might be what initially turned me off. Later, Kevin Quote
Brad Posted July 30, 2003 Report Posted July 30, 2003 Kevin, Unfortunately, I wasn't as patient as you. I gave it one listen, put it in the ebay pile, gave it another half hearted listen and out it went. You're probably right. I might have been to quick on the trigger finger. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted July 30, 2003 Report Posted July 30, 2003 I have Satan on LP. Haven't listened to it yet. How is it? I have both of the records, "Soul in the Night" and "My Main Man". I don't think I've listened to Soul yet... How to know you have too much music..... Quote

I was listening to a college raido station when I heard it. I called them and I was told it was a CD import. I can't seem to find it though. Quote
JohnS Posted July 31, 2003 Report Posted July 31, 2003 Green and Stitt are together on a Prestige date from 1965 entitled "POW". It's a nice session and Stitt and Green are a good pairing. My copy of this is on Roulette for some reason. Good luck finding "My Main Man", well worth seeking out. Quote
J.A.W. Posted February 14, 2004 Report Posted February 14, 2004 (edited) My Main Man was released on CD in Japan on January 28, 2004: Universal UCCC-9077. Hiroshi Tanno will undoubtedly be able to supply it: hiroshi@earlyrecords.com. Edited February 15, 2004 by J.A.W. Quote
