B. Clugston Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 amazon is showing a 6/6 release date for what appears to be a box set entitled "The House That Trane Built: The Impulse Records Story." Does anyone know anything about this? It's a best-of label compilation which is presumably a spin-off of Ashley Kahn's book of the same name, or vice-versa. Quote

ghost of miles Posted May 11, 2006 Report Posted May 11, 2006 WBGO's produced a one-hour radio special to go along with it, and I think McCoy Tyner will be playing some dates in June associated with this release as well. Quote
bertrand Posted May 11, 2006 Report Posted May 11, 2006 (edited) McCoy will also be at University of Maryland in October with a septet (!) playing a tribute to Impulse! They didn't mention this compilation, but that does tie in nicely. I know some of the other cats were Moffett, Gravatt and Dave Liebman. They specifically listed some tunes to be played: Alfie, excerpts from Black Saint And Sinner Lady, some of Love Supreme and some other 'Trane. If they don't play 'Alfie' and 'Black Saint', I will ask for a refund. Bertrand. Edited May 11, 2006 by bertrand Quote
Aggie87 Posted May 11, 2006 Report Posted May 11, 2006 (edited) According to Music Tap, Fantasy also has a Coltrane release titled "Fearless Leader" slated for September. Anybody shed some light on this one? Edited May 11, 2006 by Aggie87 Quote

No but since they don't release anything but anthologies and recordings that have been reissued over and over again, I would imagine it's an anthology of his recordings on Prestige as a leader. Quote

Have you heard when this is airing? I'd like to check it out. I don't think the publicity packet gave specific dates--just said that the program would be widely available for distribution to radio stations. You might want to e-mail WBGO (Thurston Briscoe's their programming director) and ask when they plan to air it, so that you could hear it through their website. I know that we're going to try to pick it up for WFIU. Quote
