Easily my favorite Blue Mitchell album. The cover is a classic. But it's the music! Blue & Wynton Kelly were about as perfect a match as you could ever ask for. Both were the epitome of taste and had that utterly natural "blues feeling" that can't be taught in class or in books...you're born with it. Wynton Kelly was just so amazing during this era.

Totally correct about Kinda Vague, I've been fascinated by that song since I first heard it.

An absolute classic. Hard to think of a t-p-b-d recording that I like any better than this. "I'll Close My Eyes" is blissful from the get-go... pretty hard to top for me. I stumbled onto a used xrcd copy a few years ago, which is pretty sweet. I agree about the cover, too...

I also love the "Big 6" album. Johnny Griffin and Curtis Fuller on that one, very nice. Actually, I like all of Blue Mitchell's albums so much that it's impossible for me to choose a favorite. Having said that, I think Blue's Moods is a good choice. ("Sweet Pumkin"!)

Blissful is absolutely the word for that track.

But the whole LP is wonderful. Including the cover.

The other Blue Riverside I like a lot is "Smooth as the wind". Blue really sings on that one, too.

I really love the Mosaic set and all the recordings he did with Horace...but I gotta say that I have a soft spot in my heart for Blue's Riverside recordings. Like I said, there's a magic between Blue & Wynton. Albums like Big Six, Out Of The Blue, A Sure Thing, The Cup Bearers, Soul Time (Bobby Timmons) and Smooth As The Wind are must-haves.

I feel the same way (although I'm missing Smooth As the Wind.) :(

But yeah, his Riverside albums have something special going on.

This date has some of the most relaxed Blue on record. Love that uptempo take on Ronnell Bright's "Sweet Pumpkin."

I used to play that tune with Junior Cook a lot. We also used to play "One Shirt" from "Down With It." Somewhere on a 7" reel I have the Blue/Junior Quintet live at Mintons with Chick Corea, Gene Taylor and Al Foster. Cookin'.
