connoisseur series500
Ahmad Jamal, "Awakening" You can see how it transitioned into the Essence series later on. Really fine music. Matthew
Actually, I’ve been experiencing a renewed enthusiasm for jazz lately. It seems for the past year and a half I couldn’t get too interested in jazz, bought mostly rock stuff, but now I’m back to jazz. When I purchased the Mosaic singles and the JJ box, it was my way of telling myself that I’m back in the jazz fold. The Verve Billie Holliday set is getting a lot of play right now. I'm also digging everything by Joe Pernice, just think he's a vastly underrated rock musician.
paul secor
I've been listening to an old favorite lately - Black Music in Praise of Oxala - on the Nonesuch label. I've had an LP copy since the 1970's, recently picked up a CD, and have been listening to that. It's wonderful music, transcending any labels or genres such as "folk music", "ethnic music", or "world Music". I've been daydreaming lately about possibly moving to another part of the world - no definite immediate or even far off plans, but it's fun to daydream sometimes - and one of the things I've thought about is what music I would take with me if I were to make a long distance move and could only take a limited number of sides with me. I like to listen to music through speakers, and like my LPs and CDs - don't care for ipods, headphones and such. Anyway, if it does happen, this record is one I'll take with me. jlhoots
It's not the only thing, but I have to admit I really like the new Donald Fagen CD (Morph The Cat). Others in "heavy rotation" include Matana Roberts, Monday Michiru (yeah Jim nailed me too) & the Bunky Green Label Bleu CD.
Soul Stream
I've been listening to Hank Mobley's "The Turnaround" a ton lately. Always has been a favorite, but it's really hitting home lately. The older I get, the more I appreciate Hank.
Jazzmoose
I've been getting into a serious George Clinton phase lately, both stuff I had and picking up more stuff from the Parliament/Funkadelic school of serious insanity. Don't know how long it will last, but at least Barb has decided that the jazz stuff had redeeming features after all...

7/4
There's a marching band somewhere in the neighborhood. I opened up the balcony door to check it out. I have no idea what's goin' on.
montg
Freddie Hubbard--Red Clay. I'm wondering if Red Clay marks the road not taken. It's jazz, mostly jazz rhythm, but with electric piano and, a rock song, and some rock sensibilities in rhythm and attack. It seems (to me, at least) that the fusion road traveled in the 70s mostly dumped a lot of jazz content. Red Clay is what could have been--electric hard bop. ANyway, I'm finding it difficult to locate much from this period that moves me the way this album does and I've been listening to it a lot without getting tired of it at all. neveronfriday
Teddy Wilson. Teddy Wilson. Teddy Wilson. And I'm listening to stuff you guys are never going to hear. Screw lawyers, etsates, corporate greed and stupid mofos wherever they are. P.S. Does anyone know a good lawyer who can mediate between a European and an American estate? The Magnificent Goldberg
I've recently found a couple of slightly under-appreciated gems in my collection, which I'm getting onto the turntable quite a bit. Maynard Parker - Midnight rider - Prestige PR10054 Maynard was Earland's guitarist in the early '70s and this is his only album as a leader. He had everything: a great, individual, sound; great chops; and very funky, but somewhat off the wall ideas. Larry "Wild" Wrice - Wild - PJ24 Larry was a drummer. This is the only recording he ever made. He has another unknown on organ - Bobby Blivins, a good trumpet player - Bobby Bryant, and a good reedman on alto, tenor & flute, one Jim Spaulding - James' first recording. The ten tunes are all originals by Bryant and, yes, a bit short - 3 1/2 mins on average. It's not sensational, but it's so very satisfying. It's the first time they've had a band in there, usually I just hear the crowds. Those tents are getting torn down and condos are getting built. More noise. ep1str0phy
Nice topic idea--I come in and out of 'spells,' no doubt. Right now I'm in a sort of inside/outside bag--60's post-bop, mostly. I just recently powered through a Mingus kick (and, before that, Anthony Braxton). Also--even while conflated with research purposes--I've been up on a lot of South African exile stuff (generally the Epistles and Blue Notes constituents). This goes somewhere back to my Brotherhood AOTW somewhere back... straight to yesterday, when I acquired a copy of the Bra Louis-Bra Tebs/Spirits Rejoice! twofer (not yet heard). In the midst of this, I've been especially engaged with any and all Johnny Dyani--from sideman work (Ibrahim) to solo material (mainly with Pukwana). It's powerful, endlessly moving stuff. Been on a Coltrane, and a Monk ride, not their material together, but separately. Also for some reason since my wife's diagnosed illness I've been really getting into B. B. King. . .and the Jefferson Airplane . . . .For different reasons. One for the joy. . .the other for the gritty determined defiance I guess. I hear you--in a world where purchases come fast and furious, it's nice to know that some music is there for when you really need it. I'm sure we've all had those 'it's nice to have this one around' moments (Ornette's Soapsuds, Soapsuds, in particular, got me through a few rough occasions). Best wishes, by the way. BruceH
I've been seriously digging Bobby Hutcherson lately, bigtime! I always respected him as a sideman, with the likes of Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson, Lee Morgan and so on, but was a little wary of getting his albums as a leader. Well, no longer! A recent live gig gave me the impetus to start getting his albums, and I can't get over how good they are----I've been playing 'em to death! (BB)
I just picked up Hutcherson's Stick-Up last week, my first with him as a leader and it spent more than it's share of time on the turntable. I woke up early this morning to put in a few hours of work before the family arose, for what ever I was grumpy as hell. As the coffee was brewing I must have stared at records for 5 minutes and nothing looked good. I finally settled on Monk's Dream. You know, a cup a coffee and a few sides of Monk and the world is a better place. Bill

vibes
I heard a 30-second sample of this and it sounded interesting (I knew nothing about Isaac Hayes), so I bought it and absolutely love it. I bought "The Isaac Hayes Movement" and "Shaft," soon after, and haven't opened "Shaft" yet, but love "Movement" as well. I find myself humming "Walk On By" quite a bit. The other CD currently in heavy rotation: I never tire of listening to this one.
