Enterprise Server Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Currently listening to a wonderful recording called “Coltrane Plays for Lovers”. Of course the title of the cd is silly and reeking with rank commercialism, but the music is stellar! It is a collection of recordings from Coltrane’s Prestige years. The listing of tunes is outstanding! I cut my teeth on these Prestige recordings so they have a special meaning to me. The recordings on this cd will give the listener a sample of Coltrane’s playing style which was considerably different from what he did years later for the Atlantic and Impulse labels. Tunes such as I Want To Talk About You, Invitation, Lush Life and You Leave Me Breathless populate this wonderful recording. Again, don’t be discouraged by the silly title and commercial cd graphics. This is very, very nice recording. Quote
Aggie87 Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 I don't have anything against compilations per se, but I don't think I'd want one from Coltrane. Rather have all the recordings themselves! I listened to the first two discs of the Paul Chambers Select last night, had some great Trane on there! Quote
Michael Weiss Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 (edited) Half Note broadcasts. Can't get enough. McCoy on My Favorite Things, Song of Praise and Afro Blue is for me some of the best McCoy on record period. It's all there. This music is also a great exercise-workout motivator. Really helps me get through my routine. Edited May 6, 2006 by Michael Weiss Quote

Big Al Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Lately been spinning MONK & COLTRANE AT CARNEGIE HALL and wondering what took me so long to purchase it.... Quote
BeBop Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 Which Coltrane are you enjoying right now? Ravi. Sorry about the smarta** answer. But, as it turns out, I'm listening to Grand Central (Evidence) with Ravi, Antione Roney, Jacky Terrason, Santi DeBriano, Cindy Blackman. All in all, I think I'd rather be listening to Dad. Quote
Michael Weiss Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 (edited) Half Note. My Favorite Things. McCoy's solo Devastating. Edited May 13, 2006 by Michael Weiss Quote
jazzbo Posted May 14, 2006 Author Report Posted May 14, 2006 Africa Brass, the originally released material on a K2 Japanese Impulse disc. Quote
Dmitry Posted May 15, 2006 Report Posted May 15, 2006 Ballads , the extended 2-cd set. I wonder why Trane stuck with the tenor for the whole album. I wonder what some of these standards would have sounded like with his soprano horn. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 3, 2007 Author Report Posted November 3, 2007 Okay, a girlfriend of mine bought me the new Impulse Albums Vol. 1 in an attempt to cheer me up. I have to say. . . these are a nice little digipaks. I have fun comparing these to other versions of the music I have. The sound is excelllent, rivals the K2 Japanese versions I have of some of these titles; the K2s are a tad mellower (a plus) and these are a tad more dynamic (a plus). Quote
AndrewHill Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I have about 40 Trane albums and I haven't listened to them as of late because I've been listening to so much other music lately. I snagged "Dear Old Stockholm" about three weeks ago and I couldn't believe that I let that slide for so long; Roy Haynes is a mofo on these dates Favorites are Ole Coltrane, Africa Brass, Meditations, Sun Ship, At the Village Vanguard Again!, Expression, and Om. That's what that group sounded like at that time. I doubt he tailored his playing to the recording. pretty sure its a bootleg, so if anyone wants, let me know Official release: Are you drinking again? :eye: Quote
Dan Gould Posted November 11, 2007 Report Posted November 11, 2007 The one located in my avatar and sig. He just had a zany run with his sister Gracie and then came inside to con me into giving him a cookie (he comes over to you, puts his front paws on your chair and stairs deeply into your eyes, then when he is sure he has your attention, he walks over to where he knows the treats are kept, looks up at the counter and then back at you - and if you don't give him what he wants, he'll repeat those exact steps until you do).
