I pulled out the Select the other day and put on "Oh Baby!" and it's really a crime that outside of the box this session is not otherwise domestically available. Definitely some of the best soul jazz I have heard, and among my favorite organ records at the moment along with "Organic Vibes" "The Sermon"(permanent all time fav) and "Live at Yoshi's". All the tunes are memorable, hey "Fat Judy" is a great sidewinder clone, and since Patton does have a following, its a shame that average buyers can't purchase this session. A domestic single disc reissue is probably unlikely with the Mosaic out, unless Blue Note licenses it to Water in the future or something. Anybody else think this date should be available to the wider jazz public?

Of course, my answer is yes! This was actually John Patton's personal favorite album along with his first one. It stand alone as one of the great organ dates with horns. I'd definately love to hear this RVG'd. To be honest, all of Patton's CD reissues have been robbed of bass. You can't hear his great basslines which is a shame since he was one of the best bassists who played organ!

Oh Baby and "That Certain Feeling" should be RVG'd for sure imho.

how about "Oh Baby!" be the first in a series of SoulStream reissues of Patton on Blue Note, with the bass so jacked up, and the treble lessened quite a bit?:rofl: it'll be the opposite of what people complain about with the RVG's.

Yes....this "Oh Baby" is a Soul Stream Presents production. :D

I actually bought an EQ this last week for my home stereo system, cause I got tired of not enough organ bass on these damn reissues!!!!

really? wow, I've used a graphic EQ for years, it'll help. Mine is not audiophile quality, (Technics) but it works.

I bought an old 80's Marantz EQ off ebay....'course now it's broke!!!! Think it's worth gettin' fixed though. :D

wow, its gotten some mileage. SoulStream, is the form of "Good Juice" AABAC? if that is the form, I like what John does with the bassline on what sounds like to me the "C" section at the end of the tune. BTW does anybody have any pictures of Joe Dukes? I've never seen any photos of him

I would call it ABA with a 2 bar turnaround at the end. The A sections are 6 bars and the B section is 4 bars. The song is 18 bar form. The bass turnaround he does is a standard bass pattern to get back to the tonic ©...but what makes it sound nice is that the song starts on the IV, so that bass walkup to F makes it sound a little unusual when you put it all together.

*The bassline I really like is the one that starts the song! :g I played that bass intro when I first went to John's house and he dug it. :D

Also, check out One To Twelve off of Oh Baby! for a typical/not-typical type head Patton liked to come up with. :tup

interesting stuff going on "One to Twelve", SoulStream. Finished listening to the first half of "That Certain Feeling" (end of disc 2) and "Early A.M." I like the melody, think its hip, Clifford Jarvis' drumming is explosive, out of Elvin's bag, but like firecrackers setting John's solo into more angular directions. Gotta thank this board for making me go out and get the Select a few years ago.

Great session...in fact I pretty much love everything John Patton did (although Blue John is the one possible exception).

But for some reason, my favorite Patton album has always been Let 'Em Roll. I think the match with Hutcherson's vibes is absolutely stunning and some of those songs are very memorable. In fact, the song Latona from this album should be re-visited..amazing song...you can listen to this track and hear the future Allman Brothers and Santana sounds. Ahead of it's time, perfectly executed, an absolute classic.

That Certain Feeling & Memphis To New York Spirit run a close race behind it....

That stuff that Ben Dixon pulls on "Each Time" is flabbergasting!!! One arm's doin' one thing in 4/4, the other arm's pulling it along at 3/4, and the left foot's also playing 4/4 but with a different edge! WOW!!!!! :excited:

Hard to figure why Steppin Out hasn't been reissued either as a Conn or RVG. Whatever form, it is way deserving.

It sez 'ere -

"Blue Note 24 bit by RVG" then there's some Japanese writing.

TOCJ9248, came out in November 2000, along with "Oh Baby", "Am I blue", "Chicken shack", "The right touch", "Crazy baby", "Natural soul", "Grantstand", "New perspective" and "Lightfoot". Altogether a bunch of worthy Soul Jazz material, many of them classics; few (only one or two?) issued in US. As I've frequently said, I think Mr Cuscuna has a "down" on Soul Jazz.
