HolyStitt Posted April 28, 2006 Report Posted April 28, 2006 (edited) My mother heard Finlandia by Jean Sibelius and asked me to find her a CD of the music. I do not know anything about Classical music, so I am clueless on which one to pick up for her for Mother's Day. Does anyone have any recommendations? Edited April 28, 2006 by HolyStitt Quote
Claude Posted April 28, 2006 Report Posted April 28, 2006 (edited) I don't have any recommendation because I don't have the work myself, but if you search for "Finlandia" on this classical review site you can find a number of good discs, some in budget series: http://www.classicstoday.com/search.asp I would recommend getting a disc with some more tone poems by Sibelius, which are more easy listening than his symphonies. Larry Kart Posted April 28, 2006 Report Posted April 28, 2006 Rosbaud, in good mono sound, '56 I think, with the Berlin Philharmonic: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000001GR...v=glance&n=5174 Chuck tipped me to this several years ago; he was right as usual. Also, you get the best Tapiola -- a great work. Quote
Free For All Posted April 28, 2006 Report Posted April 28, 2006 I would recommend getting a disc with some more tone poems by Sibelius, which are more easy listening than his symphonies. Here's a box with the complete symphonies and tone poems. I haven't heard it, is it worth getting? Quote
Spontooneous Posted April 28, 2006 Report Posted April 28, 2006 Well worth getting. Especially beautiful in the symphonies. Quote
