The Rep Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 Many years ago I took this Vinyl to a party with some other records and months later when I went to play the record, like mother hubburds cupboard the sleeve was empty. So here are what details I haveissued on Blue Note, number BST 84355, Produced by George Butler, arranged & conducted by Horace Ott and the track listing is, Something, Can't Take My Eyes Off You, Bridges, You Send Me, I'd Be A Fool Right Now, Didn't We, Baby, I Hold No Grudge, Lush Life, Oh Darling, Little Girl, Here's That Rainy Day, Has it ever been re-issued or included on another album. I know it was a commercial album but I liked it and would like to replace it in some way. Quote
Dan Gould Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 It has not been issued on CD to my knowledge, but I have seen it several times on ebay. I wouldn't be surprised it if it is up in an ebay seller's store as a buy-it-now. I've thought about this one before but have always been turned off by the definite appearance of "commercialness". Dan Gould Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 A copy is up right now at $7 and there are three copies available as "buy it now" ranging from $10-13. Quote
JSngry Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 Looking at the song list (and knowing the work of the arranger a little bit), I'd guess that this was more an "adult pop" record than a jazz one. But there's some good tunes on there, and Joe Williams is a singer that I'd not mind an adult pop album from too badly. I mean, Joe Williams doing "Here's That Rainy Day", "Lush Life", "Didn't We", etc., those are good songs. It would have to be really bad for it to suck, know what I mean? Quote
Dan Gould Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 Yeah, I know ... its tunes like "Something" and "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" that still gives me pause though. Quote
JSngry Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 Well, yeah, the schlock potential is above average. But those aren't exactly bad songs. Over the years, in the hands of the right singers, I've actually heard them be good songs! I guess the question is how bad you think Joe Williams can get fucked over by potentially weird material and settings. I'd bet on Joe 9 times out of 10. Quote
Shawn Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 Jimmy Witherspoon was another genius at "fighting off" bad arranging...he always sounds awesome. Quote
The Rep Posted April 28, 2006 Author Report Posted April 28, 2006 Thank you, I have only just got back on the forum because of the problems. I will check out ebay, I will try the UK first as I live in England. Let me tell you this is a commercial record but it is so good. I have a lot of Joe's stuff but I don't think I have heard him sound better or more comfortable, its as though the songs were writen with him in mind. Quote
