JSngry Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 Nabbed this puppy used a while back and have finally gotten around to checking it out in depth the last few weeks. AMG gives it 2.5 stars, but that's just wrong. Despite his notorious flamboyance over the years, Hamp could flat-out PLAY when the time came, and in this loose-but-together, informally structured (and very well-recorded) 1953 jam session, the time came. Divided between vibes/bass/guitar trios (Buddy Montgomery & Billy Mackel) and larger groups (which include, a.o., Jimmy Cleveland, Mezz Mezzrow, & Clifford Scott), Hamp is an endless font of ideas throughout. Quiet as it's sometimes kept, Hamp was one of the more harmonically advanced Swing Era players, and his playing here is rife with alterations and substitutions, as well as a seemingly endless rhythmic flow. No bebop from him, but so what? Ideas and swing know no genre limitations. In fact, on this session, he plays with a freshness and inventiveness that many more "modern" players would be hard-pressed to match. He just goes and goes and goes and goes, and the results are never cheap or boring. The larger groups find everybody in excellent form also (Cleveland in particular seems fired up and good to go). French tenorist Alix Combelle, a new name to me, is a real treat, playing gritty, hard-swinging tenor in the Hawk-via-Ben manner. A VERY solid player he seems to be, and I'd like to hear more of him sometime. His playing really seems to get to Hamp, who is heard offering him noticable calls of approval and encouragement. Not a "landmark" disc, or anything like that, but certainly one that many here will find to their liking, and one that might well surprise those who know Hampton more by his reputation than by his playing. This is damn good stuff. Check it out. Quote
brownie Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 Damn good stuff, yes!!! I grew up with these. Still have the original French Vogue ten-inchers. Hampton on 'September in the Rain' is a classic. How come I enjoy Hampton's humming so much and hate Keith Jarrett doing the same thing? Can it be that Hamps swings it? One thing that bothers me on those Hamptons in Paris Vogues is the sound of Monk Montgomery who was playing a very early version of an electric bass. As for Alix Combelle, that's the man who played - among many records - on the Coleman Hawkins/Benny Carter/Django Reinhardt session that produced 'Crazy Rhythm', 'Honeysuckle Rose' and 'Out of Nowhere'. Swinging Swede Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 Alix Combelle has sometimes been called ”The French Coleman Hawkins”, and when he visited the US in the late 30s Tommy Dorsey was so impressed that he offered him a job in his big band. He recorded quite a bit under his own name as well. There are three CDs on Classics of which I first and foremost would recommend the earliest one. Django Reinhardt is on several of the sessions too. Big Wheel Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 And it can be had at GraveyardMall.com for $6! Quote
jazzbo Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 Big thumbs up for the Hamp and the Combelle discs! Quote
king ubu Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 amazon.fr has it for a reasonable price, too. A very good one, indeed. Jim: I think you've got an older edition. The one below has 20 bit remastering, and is from 1997-99. Lionel Hampton's Paris All Stars ubu Quote
king ubu Posted July 28, 2003 Report Posted July 28, 2003 ...the great Guy Lafitte on tenor sax... ... has of course his own beautiful album in the Jazz in Paris series: Geo(rge?) Daly is on vibes and Raymond Fol on piano. Highly recommended! ubu Quote
JSngry Posted September 15, 2003 Author Report Posted September 15, 2003 Well shoot my booty, Rudy and call me a cab, Calloway, some of this Hampton Vogue stuff was on Blue Note once upon a time! Quote
Harold_Z Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 (edited) The Hamp cd is a gas. Hamp could "swing you into bad health" as the saying goes. I've been digging the Verve Quartet sides too. Killer stuff. For more on Combelle, check out the "Coleman Hawkins All Star Jam Band" date, a 1937 date available on a number of cds. including Classics. Bean, Combelle, Benny Carter and another French Saxophonist whose name escapes me at the moment. Django's on board too, and among other things, they do a classic "Out Of Nowhere". GREAT SESSION ! king ubu Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Jim: the following Blue Note Sessions were recorded in Paris. At least the Clifford Brown stuff (which was also on Prestige CDs), (some of) the Gillespie and the Hampton recordings are known to me as Vogue recordings. The Legge session actually looks like it would fit very nicely with the two volumes called "Piano Collection Volume 1/2" (with sessions by Erroll Garner, George Wallington, Al Haig, Jimmy Jones and Arnold Ross - all very good to great stuff by the way, those should also be available from amazon.fr) It seems like Blue Note did have some sort of a deal to release that stuff states-side. king ubu Posted September 16, 2003 Report Posted September 16, 2003 and anyone know whether this stuff has been issued on CD? And more importantly whether it is available or incredibly OOP couw: don't know about the Moody stuff (but sure would love to hear that! Picked up all the Hodeir stuff from the Jazz In Paris series as well as the one from the Original Vogue Masters). The Gillespie, Hampton (I posted the cover and link for that above) and all the Brownie stuff was available in the Original Vogue Masters series. A very good series. Over on AAJ (cannot link right now) I posted a list of this series. I managed to pick up most of them, and can only recommend everyone else to do so, too! Some great stuff by Dizzy, Brownie, Byas, Bobby Jaspar, Martial Solal etc. The easiest way to find at least some of them is amazon.fr. ubu Quote
king ubu Posted September 16, 2003 Report Posted September 16, 2003 (edited) This link gives you (all?) of what's still available (and some more not from these series): http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/search-ha...5410900-2969847 I highly recommend the following ones: (you sure all have this, but...) and here comes a personal favorite, a great record by a great saxophone player: ubu Edited September 16, 2003 by king ubu Quote
king ubu Posted September 16, 2003 Report Posted September 16, 2003 And these three collect a nice bunch of sessions: ubu Quote
king ubu Posted September 16, 2003 Report Posted September 16, 2003 well, my link does not work. Make a search for "vogue jazz", and you'll find some of the "Original Vogue Masters" (together with some other less interesting items). ubu Quote
JSngry Posted September 16, 2003 Author Report Posted September 16, 2003 Some (all?) of the Moody stuff w/Strings was released in the BMG series. Quote
