DrJ Posted July 26, 2003 Report Posted July 26, 2003 I've been eyeing the DVD-A version of this Red Rodney classic recording. Anyone have it who can vouch for the sound quality in comparison to a straight CD reissue? Quote
jazzbo Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 The music is great! I haven't heard the DVD-A version. Quote
brownie Posted July 27, 2003 Report Posted July 27, 2003 I have this in its Onyx LP silver-covered reincarnation. Rodney is OK but the rhythm section of Tommy Flanagan, Oscar Pettiford and Philly Joe Jones (Elvin subs in for Philly Joe on a couple of tracks) is pure joy. Audio was good but am surprised it gets an audiophile treatment. But I may be wrong. Quote
DrJ Posted July 27, 2003 Author Report Posted July 27, 2003 Thanks for the opinions on the music, guys. It is a Van Gelder recording, so I'm assuming it's worthy of the upgrade. Think I'll go ahead and take the plunge! Quote
BERIGAN Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 (edited) Dr J, Just now seeing your thread....it's great! I found it at a DVD store going out of business, only DVD audio I own...I mentioned it on the old board in a thread about what was the best sounding lp,scad,DVD, cd, 78 you ever heard , and this was my choice for the best I ever heard....just put it on again, and still feel the same way...feels like Red and the gang are in my living room! Hope you won't be disappointed, but don't think you will...oh, and music is ok as well! EDIT. Well, I did notice a couple pops almost like a record! Perhaps my Toshiba has a problem.... DrJ Posted July 29, 2003 Author Report Posted July 29, 2003 Ah, more fuel for the fire! Thanks Berigan. I will be ordering this one today. B) Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted July 29, 2003 Report Posted July 29, 2003 Isn't this material the same stuff on the Savoy CD "Fiery"? I have that CD so I didn't pick up the DAD (Classic Records' version of a 24/96 DVD-Audio). If I remember correctly, the music is pretty good. Maybe it's time to spin it again for a refresher? FWIW, I haven't heard any Classics DAD that's knocked my socks off, if you know what I mean. Sure they sound good, but when you're expecting "WOW" and you get "gee, that sounds good"... Later, Kevin Quote
DrJ Posted July 29, 2003 Author Report Posted July 29, 2003 That was one reason I checked in on this, Kevin - I have heard general comments about DADs that were not glowing. Oh well, my guess is it will be superior to the Savoy FIERY standard CD (they are the same, I believe). Will try and remember to post an opinion after it arrives. Quote
