(Can't Remember Stuff ) -- So what's in the Mosaic Select that's coming out, and other than what's in the Select, what do I need to get to have all is BN stuff? I saw a bunch of his stuff Friday doing some cd hunting, but I couldn't pull the triger because I didn't want to duplicate blah,blah,blah. PS: Is "Blue John" worth picking up. I'm not a big fan of George Braith, in fact, I got rid of his doubletime BN release. There seems to be two different reviews for AMG. Soul Stream Posted March 17, 2003 Report Posted March 17, 2003 If you didn't like Braith's 3 Blue Note albums, I don't think you'd like "Blue John" at all. IMHO, the Braith solo efforts are better. I think the Mosaic is supposed to have Patton's "Along Came John" "The Way I Feel" "Oh Baby" "Let 'Em Roll" "That Certain Feeling" and either part of "Understanding" or Harold Vick's "Steppin' Out." IMHO this is a fucked up list. Along Came John is OUT on CD, Let Em Roll is OUT on CD (and has been forever.) And then to release PART of Under or Steppin'????? This is a crackhead Cuscuna lineup. Sorry. This is really a no brainer....The Way I Feel...Oh Baby...That Certain Feeling...Accent On The Blues...Understanding. Plus any and all Bonus material. I would have included "Got A Good Thing Going" but I understand it's coming out soon enough. I don't know what the status of this is...on hold? Coming? Without the BNBB on this one we're fucked as far as answers go I guess. Unless someone e-mails Cuscuna. Quote

I remember reading a thread related to this in the old days, and I don't recall "Let 'em Roll" or "Steppin' Out" ever being mentioned as being in the set. I could be wrong, however. These could easily fit on a "Complete Blue Note Recordings of John Patton" boxset with about 6 discs. Maybe 7. And the set would then cost a little over a hundred bucks, right? What's wrong with that? Instead we get a Select series with, as Soul Stream pointed out, a bunch of stuff that is already available and has been available for YEARS instead of the recordings that have never been on CD in the US. I won't buy the Select just to get that one. I suppose I could sell the others I have in order to justify the purchase. Also I believe Got A Good Thing Going On is coming out as a Rare Groove. David Ayers Posted March 17, 2003 Report Posted March 17, 2003 I am not very convinced by the planning on this series. The Carmell Jones made sense as none of the items had been on domestic CD. The Grachan Moncur did not make sense to me (as a long time collector) since only one LP had been previously unavailable. If a set contains all or mostly new-to-CD items that is one thing. But this pick-n-mix approach combining items that many people already have with maybe one or two that they don't seems crazy. The Patton set seems particularly badly planned. It is their business, I suppose, but I am pretty tired of having the impression that I am being targetted to rebuy things that I have already bought. Quote

On the old board, a few people brought up issues with the sound of the Moncur set. Any comments/suggestions? Should I hold off? I agree with B3-er. I would love to see a larger Patton set. Quote

Brad Posted March 17, 2003 Report Posted March 17, 2003 My feeling about the Select series is that it's a way to get the music out without having to make a big investment: no big box and no book to have to create or pay for. It's a way to do it inexpensively and allows them to concentrate on a few full blown box sets. Otherwise, it may take a while to get them out. In addition, some of the Mosaic Selects they may be putting out may not be large enough to warrant the full Mosaic treatment (like the Carmell Jones). You may complain about certain aspects of what they're doing but if they're financially limited by what they can do and they can get the music out, what's the problem. Better this way than no way at all. Had it not been this way, I doubt I would have ever gotten to listen to some of Carmell Jones' music. Quote

Michael decided to go with a complete Understanding, and no Harold Vick Steppin' Out (same line-up as Oh Baby!) I already have: Along Came John Blue John Let 'Em Roll Got A Good Thing Goin' Memphis To New York Spirit Bogaloo Accent On The Blues With the Mosaic select, I will have the complete Patton BN sessions. This box works out very nicely for me! I know others are miffed, however. I certainly would have preferred Blue John as well instead of Along Came John, if only because there are some extra tracks from Blue John that have not yet come out (for example, a version of Grant Green's 'Jean De Fleur').
