slide_advantage_redoux Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 I am wanting opinions on Palmetto records. Production values, catalogue, etc. Thanks Quote
BFrank Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 Good stuff. Interesting, adventurous music. eMusic carries that label, if you want an inexpensive way to check them out. Quote

Production values, catalogue, etc. Thanks Great production values, and a great catalogue. Check out Ben Allison, Frank Kimbrough, other participants in the Jazz Composers Collective. Palmetto also offers Andrew Hill's Dusk, which I think is a very fine latter-day effort from him. And Fred Hersch...and Marty Erlich...a great label. Quote
Guy Berger Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 I only have two Palmetto discs -- Andrew Hill's Dusk and Ben Allison's Riding the Nuclear Tiger. I like both very much. Guy Quote

Guy Those two might be my favorites on the label (though the Matt Wilson discs come close). Either or both would be a great place to start. Quote
Clunky Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 David Berkman has some excellent disc on Palmetto Quote
gdogus Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 One can also find Javon Jackson on Palmetto, as well as Bobby Watson and Horizon, some Dewey Redman (In London), Bobby Previte...the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra... Quote
marcello Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 I'm looking forward to the new Frank Kimbrough recording called Play, with Masa Kamaguchi and Paul Motian. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 I have Javon Jackson's "Easy does it", which is pretty good and Lonnie Smiff's "Too damn hot", which is brilliant. I keep forgetting to check out the Greg Hatza albums on Palmetto - he was a very good Jimmy Smiff-influenced organist in the 60s. MG Quote
mikeweil Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 All that I've bought sounded fine and lived up to their expectations. Andrew Hill, Matt Wilson, Larry Goldings, Javon Jackson, Lonnie Smith, Dave MacKay, Sam Newsome, The Voodoo Dogs .... I'd buy anything from them if I know I like some of the musicians involved. Quote
king ubu Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 I have some Palmetto discs and like them all, more or less (the Javon Jackson may be the least interesting one, for me): Larry Goldings - Moonbird Fred Hersch Trio - Live at the Village Vanguard Fred Hersch Trio - + 2 Andrew Hill - A Beautiful Day Andrew Hill - Dusk Javon Jackson - Easy Does It Rick Margitza - Memento Rick Margitza - Heart of Hearts Ted Nash - Still Evolved Greg Tardy - Abundance The Hills and the Tardy are probably my favourites from these. Aggie87 Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 Thumbs up for: Ben Allison - Peace Pipe Joel Frahm/Brad Mehldau - Don't Explain Larry Goldings - Sweet Science Andrew Hill - Dusk Bobby Previte - Counterclockwise Voodoo Dogs Matt Wilson - Arts & Crafts Quote
md655321 Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 Ill throw in the now ubiquitous Andrew hill - Dusk rec. Fantastic album. I also LOVE Fred Hersh - +2 and Marty Ehrlich - Line on Love. Palmetto is for 3 for 3 with me for having some of the best jazz records in recent memory. Quote
montg Posted April 22, 2006 Report Posted April 22, 2006 The Bobby Watson (Horizon Reassembled) and Ben Allison (Nuclear Tiger) are probably two of my favorite new releases over the past few years. I guess the only complaint I have about the label is that they don't put out enough material. Quote
Nate Dorward Posted April 22, 2006 Report Posted April 22, 2006 Not one of the more "modern"-sounding ones, but Bill Mays' Coming Home is an outstanding trio disc. I don't like the later live one quite so much, though it's fine. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted April 23, 2006 Report Posted April 23, 2006 I like "The Bill Mays Trio - Summer Sketches". Quote
jlhoots Posted April 24, 2006 Report Posted April 24, 2006 The Ted Nash CD not specifically mentioned that I really like is Espada De La Noche. Quote
