Soulstation1 Posted April 6, 2006 Report Posted April 6, 2006 still ain't got them done maybe today.... Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted April 6, 2006 Report Posted April 6, 2006 Got ours done in the Rooster household about 4 or 5 weeks ago. Got our refunds (federal and state) in something like 8 days (Federal), and some crazy quick turnaround (3 days? - less than 72 hours?) for the state refund. Still can't believe that one. Turbo Tax makes doing taxes a hell of a lot easier than in years past (I think this is the third year we've used Turbo Tax). Well, that and the fact my wife does all our taxes, and she's 1000 times more organized than I am, in terms of keeping things and filing them in ways that actually allow for finding them again when you need them. I think she spent 2 hours doing our taxes, and then we both spent another hour about a week later double-checking everying together. I really HATE doing taxes (or anything involving forms), so the fact she does them is a blessing. Quote
RDK Posted April 6, 2006 Report Posted April 6, 2006 Having an accountant is great. Getting another nice refund this year - which isn't really "found money," just means i overpaid over the course of the year. Still, i prefer that to coughing up money in April. Looks like we'll be buying an HDTV set this year, getting the heat pump replaced, and i hope to buy myself a few Mosaics. Quote
ejp626 Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 Taxes were incredibly unbearable this year. I moved countries (never a good idea when it comes to taxes -- moving states is bad enough) and the information I had turned out to be incorrect. The US does tax foreign income until you've lived in the other country for 12 months. While you can offset foreign taxes, that didn't really help that much. I had nearly all of the key documents, but there were a handful that hadn't shown up, so I had to file for an extension. Oh, and I sold my home, and since part of it was a rental property, each portion has completely different tax treatment and different tax forms. It appears I will have to file roughly twenty pages of tax forms and supporting material. Then in another few months, I have to file with the UK, since my situation is too complicated for them to calculate independently. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 I hear you. Moving to a different state has made mine a pain this year, and no, I'm still not done. Quote
Noj Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 I did mine on Turbo Tax software for the first time this year. I've been told by several people that my returns are too small, so I plan on taking all my taxes for the last few years to a professional to see if the government should have given me back more bread. I hope so, I need some Mosaic money. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted April 11, 2006 Author Report Posted April 11, 2006 today or tomorrow my taxes will be finished Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 What period is this deadline for? MG Quote
Soulstation1 Posted April 11, 2006 Author Report Posted April 11, 2006 The 2005 tax year Postmarked by April 17, 2005, since the 15th is on the weekend ss1 Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 Cor, only three and a half months after the end of the period! Over here, we have until December, but really until October, for the tax year ending the previous April - if we miss October, the Inland Revenue will arbitrarily estimate what we owe. Then it will take ages to get the tax right for the following year. (We pay tax as we go, through employers' deductions.) MG Quote

Well I now feel I got off easy filing 20 pages worth of Form 1116. My agnostic inclination fades when going through bs like that and now hope there's a special place in hell for the monkeys & their typewriters who thought up that blasted form & instruction set. You have my deepest sympathies. Tonight - I get drunk in celebration that I'm done with 'em for another year. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted April 11, 2006 Author Report Posted April 11, 2006 (edited) it took 2 mf hours, but i'm done 1 hour wait and 1 hour for the guy to figure it out got a $50 refund, first time in 12/13 years i get a refund guy was sorry for taking so long, but i told him thanks, at least someone can help me do them ss1 Edited April 11, 2006 by Soulstation1 Quote
wesbed Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 I had my taxes complete and in the mail in the middle of March. This is the first time in YEARS that I've had my taxes done before April 14th. It feels nice to not have to be concerned about the last minute post office rush this year. Quote
.:.impossible Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 We used Turbo Tax again this year and got great returns from Rhode Island, North Carolina, and Fed. I really don't mind overpaying because this time of year almost feels like Christmas when the refund is due. Finding out that you've underpaid is not fun. My income has fluctuated greatly over the past 3-4 years, so this time of year has usually been quite a surprise. This year it was a pleasant one! I bought four cubes of pavers and have an area dug up in my back yard for a nice sized patio! Just in time for the great weather! I'm also looking at a Slim Device Squeezebox, among other things. Paid off some debt, etc. Good year! Quote
rostasi Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 Refund again! Yay! Spent some of it on Hermann Nitsch boxset. Quote
catesta Posted April 12, 2006 Report Posted April 12, 2006 Not done yet. I've been advised they will be complete by Friday. Quote
RDK Posted April 12, 2006 Report Posted April 12, 2006 Shit. The same day we sign our return papers (getting a nice refund this year ) we get a letter in the mail from the IRS. An audit of last year's taxes. Quote

Randy Twizzle Posted April 15, 2006 Report Posted April 15, 2006 An actor friend (lots of deductions for things like movie and theatre tickets and cab rides to auditions) recently got a 2-year IRS audit notice the day before entering the hospital to have major colon surgery. He's had better weeks. Quote

Jazzmoose Posted April 17, 2006 Report Posted April 17, 2006 Just got mine finished and ready to mail... Quote
Big Wheel Posted April 17, 2006 Report Posted April 17, 2006 Did them all by myself for the first time this year and used TurboTax Online (only $40 and free e-filing!). E-filing is great - doing them took about 3 hours and the return's been accepted by the IRS and the state DOR already. Too bad I owe about $70. Quote
