Kalo Posted April 7, 2006 Report Posted April 7, 2006 I'd like to acquire the Mulligan Quartet material. What "in print" CDs do I need to get? Thanks. Gerry Mulligan - The Original Quartet with Chet Baker (Pacific Jazz/West Coast Classics, 2 Discs CDP 72434 944072 2) That about covers it, plus: Konitz Meets Mulligan/Lee Konitz and the Gerry Mulligan Quartet (Pacific Jazz, CDP 7 46847 2) Quote
Brad Posted April 7, 2006 Report Posted April 7, 2006 It's the books that make the difference as a lot of the material is available already. Quote
LarryCurleyMoe Posted April 7, 2006 Report Posted April 7, 2006 I'd say probably the Monk, also - Albert Ammons/Meade Lux Lewis? Quote
Larry Kart Posted April 7, 2006 Report Posted April 7, 2006 Probably doesn't need to be said, but Roswell Rudd's booklet essay on Nichols need to be copied if you're going to sell the Mosaic. Quote

Absolutely - it's a lovely tribute and with great photos of Herbie too. A set to hang onto IMO (although I would say that of all of them. ) Quote

But why sell at all? I've held on to my Mosaic vinyl, as I recall that at least one early review of the Blue Note CD set complained of bad sound and drop-outs. Can anyone confirm this? Quote

Not true. It sounds fine. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 8, 2006 Report Posted April 8, 2006 The Blue Note cd set sounds fine. I had both, and prefer ultimately the piano sound on the Mosaic cd set. (The remastering is by different engineers). I also preferred the Mosaic booklet, though the Blue Note booklet is nice, with some cool livingroom photos! Quote
J.A.W. Posted April 8, 2006 Report Posted April 8, 2006 I never noticed anything wrong with the Blue Note 2CD-set. Like Lon I prefer the piano sound on the Mosaic, the whole "sound picture" just sounds a bit better to me. No big deal. The music is brilliant, so anyone who is interested, get the Blue Note set!
