Big Al Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 9. Is it Lockjaw? NMCOT at all, I avoid this kind of playing at all costs unless it’s included in a BFT, in which case I am duty bound to listen all the way. Gets worse towards the end. Hey... hey.... HEY NOW!!!! Quote
JSngry Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 TRACK TWO - Ah, charanga! Well, not really charanga, since I think there's only one violinist. "Evocative of charanga" would be more accurate. Mike, why didn't you bust me about this? Quote
sidewinder Posted April 21, 2006 Report Posted April 21, 2006 (edited) Sory it's late: Track 1 - Definitely West Coast and the trumpet section in particular tells me this band is stacked with crack session players. Maynard bursting a lip in there? Lead alto sounds at first hearing to be Art Pepper but I don't think it's him. Unmistakably Ben Webster on tenor, suspect it was recorded around 1959/60. Track 2 - Violin plus latin percussion. First instinct was that this might be Svend Amundsen but Regina Carter also comes to mind. Interesting sound in the backing - reminds me of Hilton Ruiz/Gonzales Bros./Giovanni Hidalgo. Certainly sounds like Andy Gonzales on bass. Track 3 - 'Stormy Weather'. Must be Rahsaan on both tenor and either stritch/manzello. Can't place the album but suspect that it's on one of the later Warner Bros. recordings (which I don't have). Su[risingly subdued ! Track 4 - Piano trio. Familiar standard but can't place it (I know that Yusef Lateef recorded this particular tune on oboe I think). Very bluesy style - wouldn't be Horace Parlan on Steeplechase would it? Track 5 - Again, this one is very familiar but can't immediately place it. The trumpeter has to be Booker Little (awesome), the rhythmn team is definitely Wynton Kelly/Paul Chambers/Jimmy Cobb so a process of deduction leads me to Frank Stroziers album on Vee-Jay. It's in the Kelly/Chambers Mosaic box, so I should know this one (I think there are about 25 takes of this one in the box so no wonder I remember it). Fantastic stuff ! Track 6 - 'Strange Fruit'. Don't know this version. Is that Walt Dickerson on vibes? Quassimodo on bells? Like this a lot and would like to know the details. Haven't a clue re: the narrator. Track 7 - 'Manha De Carnival', very familiar tune - oh no it's 'No More Blues'. That sounds a lot like Victor Feldman on the solo vibes. Wouldn't be from his multi-instrumental feature Pacific Jazz LP would it? Track 8 - Again, sounds very familiar but just can't place it. The style has a strong hint of Abdullah Ibrahim's group to it but not sure of the lineup. Sounds like it was recorded late 80s/early 90s. Nice ! I'll try to finish off the rest this weekend. Very nice compilation Evan which I have enjoyed listening to. Thanks ! Edited April 21, 2006 by sidewinder Quote

The style has a strong hint of Abdullah Ibrahim's group to it but not sure of the lineup. Sounds like it was recorded late 80s/early 90s. Nice ! Hm, that might explain why I'm getting a more "avant-garde" sound in my head with this one--I recently reviewed a (very good) album by David Borgo of Ibrahim tunes, which takes them a little "out". Might even have this tune on it, I'll check. Quote

I've definitely heard this tune before and I think I've even heard the track (the 'out' trumpet solo sounds familiar - sort of Eddie Galeish) but I just can't place it ! Quote
JSngry Posted April 22, 2006 Report Posted April 22, 2006 The trumpet solo sounds like Michael Ray to me, but now that it's been mentioned, the tune itself does have an Ibrahim-ish flavor to the ensemble sound. Quote

marcoliv Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 well, of ocurse i don't know who's playing what but this is a compilation that really got me hooked. billions of thanks Evan for having slow traffic sounding so nice my favorite tracks are the second one with this Clare Fischer flavour, the fourth one as i'm clearly addicted on piano trios and track 12 that i enjoyed very much too. the performance of stormy weather is really gorgeous track 6 is very good for testing the hi-fi is Charles Famborugh involved on track 10? track 7 is one of my favorite musics ever with one the sweetest lyrics i ever heard i was expecting to have RRK in one of the tracks so i'm pleased he is at least closing the show thanks Evan, you did such a great job Marcus Quote
catesta Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 (edited) Here I am late as usual. 1. Major hard hitting swing here. Any chance I'm hearing Art Pepper and Ben Webster in the mix? 2. Nice, but no clue. Grappelli with a latin twist? 3. Stormy Weather! That's as much as I get. I like it though. 4. Exactly Like You Nice enough playing. Is this some of the O.P. Telarc stuff he was putting out in the early 90s? Probably not Oscar at all. It could be one of the younger cats like Benny Green. 5. Thought Jackie McLean at first, but clearly it's not. This one was smokin' I'll be looking for it if still in print. 6. 7. Nice. 8. A-Ha! That's Mr. Hugh Ragin off of "Feel the Sunshine". I've not had this cd long so it's still very fresh in my mind. I really dig Craig Taborn on piano. 9. For the most part the organ looses me. Tenor could be Arnett Cobb or Don Wilkerson? I'm really lost. 10. I thought Houston Person on alto, but no way. A little too long for a tune like this and the cry out at the end really blew it for me. 11. No doubt Lester Leaps In and no doubt Bird with that funny tone from the "Bird" movie music. The tune smokes. 12. Not bad, not bad at all. I'm digging it. 13. Take a bow! Thanks Evan. Edited April 27, 2006 by catesta Quote
