jazzbo Posted April 4, 2006 Report Posted April 4, 2006 I think that DIW was a reissue of the Amsterdam concerts, which I have on Ullysses (sp?). Great sets! Yes, the vinyl set was a partnership by Sue Mingus and Fred Cohen. I believe Fred still has copies for sale. Was not aware that Fred Cohen had anything to do with the Ulysse Musique releases. The Amsterdam concert albums (a double LP plus a single one' state they were 'produced for records by Ulysse Musique with the kind permission of Jazz Workshop Inc. and Susan Graham Mingus'. Ulysee was a French label that also issued a Cannonball Adderley concert. Great sets, yes! I have really nicely pressed cd versions on Ullysse. THANKS to the unreal generosity of an infrequent board member! Quote
Guest Posted April 6, 2006 Report Posted April 6, 2006 From mingusmingusmingus.com: New MBB and Legacy recordings Mon, Feb. 13 2006 The Mingus Big Band made a live recording at the Blue Note in Tokyo, New Year's Eve, Dec. 3lst, 2005-06. This recording, together with the Charles Mingus live album,"Music Written for Monterey, Not Played, Performed at UCLA, l965" --which has never before appeared on CD -- will be issued simultaneously in September 2006 on the SueMingusMusic label, distributed by Sunnyside and Universal Music. Together, these two albums offer an opportunity to hear Charles Mingus performing his own music live in l965, as well as today's musicians carrying his huge legacy of composition into the future. thank you for these news! I think it's 20 years I am waiting to hear the Mingus At Monterey n.2 performance, the concert Mingus planned to record the year after the tryumph he had in 1964 (we can enjoy in the aforementioned live album, one of his greatest efforts imho). In this period Mingus was at the very peak of his artistic skills and turbulent life, right after the Impulse! records, the stunning european tour, the magnificient Monterey 1964 performance, where his favourite Dolphy could not be because of his premature death in Berlin. This 1965 first act went disbanded because of organization problems and the very bad weather (if I remember right) at Monterey. After 5 days Mingus and his group played and recorded the program -all new music, originally composed for the Monterey 1965 audience, at UCLA. A very irregoular distribution by Mingus' indipendent and short-lived record company followed. Then the first long retirement of the great bass player from music until 1970. Can't wait to have finally a good copy of this! Quote
Guy Berger Posted April 6, 2006 Author Report Posted April 6, 2006 Has the Mingus at Monterey (1964, the one with an octet version of "Meditations") ever been issued on CD? I guess with Concord in charge we're never going to see this reissued. Guy Quote

I had the double-lp and become delighted with these spoken intervals. Then I had the japanese cd too. A friend of mine showed me he had a french OJC cd version, also edited without the Mingus' stage talk. I remember being emotionally touched listening Meditations and the roaring applause at the end, while an isolated Mingus' voice after a while raises saying -it's a dream come true- Quote
