Big Al Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 Heck, he's twelve years older than me, and in far better shape than I'll ever be, especially when I'm his age!!!! Can you imagine what he'd have been like--with this kind of work ethic--when Babe Ruth was in his prime? Quote
Dan Gould Posted August 23, 2006 Author Report Posted August 23, 2006 HEATWAVE: One more for you, dipshit. You know who else thinks Wily Mo Pena is headed for very big things? DAVID ORTIZ. Says he's the strongest hitter he's ever seen, much stronger than Papi in fact. Calls him a "baby" and compares his hitting skills at 24 to Pena's and says Pena is much better. So fuckwad, who has a better handle on Pena's skills? an asswipe like yourself OR David Ortiz Quote
BERIGAN Posted August 23, 2006 Report Posted August 23, 2006 Nice article about a true great, Julio Franco. This guy should be the one who gets displayed as a real "baseball hero." I loved him when he was a Ranger, and have had nothing but the utmost respect for him since then. Still playing after all these years By DON BOWMAN Franco made his debut April 23, 1982, going 1-for-4 against the St. Louis Cardinals and Bob Forsch in a 9-2 Philadelphia loss Bob Forsch? One of my Favorite Cardinals. Rooted for him as a kid, and I'm now 39!!! Wonder if he got a hit off of Jim Kaat that year! Quote
Patrick Posted August 24, 2006 Report Posted August 24, 2006 and now a brief historical remembrance (not related to Julio Franco)... It was 70 years ago today that 17-year-old Bob Feller made his first major league start for the Cleveland Indians against the St Louis Browns. He won 4-1, and struck out 15! Just one shy of the then current AL record, and two shy of the MLB record. Three weeks later he struck out 17 Philadelphia A's to tie the MLB record. That guy was tough. Bob Feller story ...and now back to discussing whether a team with twice the Indians payroll can/should compete against a team with 3.5X the Indians payroll. Manny in left, Coco in center, Grady "for the ladies" Sizemore ain't available...yet. Anybody need Aaron Boone for the push to the playoffs? Quote
Dave James Posted August 24, 2006 Report Posted August 24, 2006 (edited) Here's another "youngest" question for your consideration. Who was the youngest pitcher to ever pitch in a major league baseball game? How old was he? Who did he pitch for? What year? Up over and out. Edited August 24, 2006 by Dave James Quote

I thought you were asking, but I bet you know, don't you??? I'll let folks keep guessing then.... Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 24, 2006 Report Posted August 24, 2006 A 15-year-old, wasn't it? Pitched for the Reds (were they still the Red Legs then?)... Joe Nuxhall, I think. Quote
Randy Twizzle Posted August 24, 2006 Report Posted August 24, 2006 Nuxhall was 15 in 1944 when he pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing five runs on five walks, two wild pitches and two singles. He was sent back to the minors a few days later and returned to the majors in 1952 where he stayed until 1966. Quote

Patrick Posted August 24, 2006 Report Posted August 24, 2006 anyone see last night's game the tribe was down 10 - 1 after one inning and came back won the mf game 15 - 13 in extra innings I was driving home from dinner in the DC suburbs and checked to see if the Indians AM flagstation would come in on the car radio. It did, and it was play-by-play guy Tom Hamilton describing in a very subdued tone how "the horses had already left the barn", and that the score was 9 - 0 or 9 - 1 in the first inning. At that point, I switched over to tunes. Nice comeback, but it was the Royals. Anyone need a (supposed) second or third starter? Paul Byrd [Mark Shapiro's attempt at replacing Millwood] should be available. For those redecorating their rotations, he and Jason Johnson make a nice matching pair. Quote
