Bol Posted April 2, 2006 Report Posted April 2, 2006 Is this set worth getting? I saw it for $20 at a used CD store yesterday. Quote
brownie Posted April 2, 2006 Report Posted April 2, 2006 By all means yes... Great set! Great bargain! Quote
jazzbo Posted April 2, 2006 Report Posted April 2, 2006 (edited) 20 bucks? GO FOR IT. Edited April 3, 2006 by jazzbo Quote
jazzbo Posted April 2, 2006 Report Posted April 2, 2006 I love the music on this set. I'm the kind of guy who wants ALL of the hot jazz on Blue Note. But for many this may be all they need. Well selected, great booklet. Quote
HolyStitt Posted April 2, 2006 Report Posted April 2, 2006 Yes!! I really love the music on this set. The only negative is that all the discs in my set suffered from disc rot. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 2, 2006 Report Posted April 2, 2006 I still have most of this stuff on 78. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 2, 2006 Report Posted April 2, 2006 I'll bet they sound great on that Silvertone! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 I'll bet they sound great on that Silvertone! Quote
jazzbo Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 My father has a wind up Victrola, big cabinet, that was his father's. Man, 78s sound fun on that! Quote
blake Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 Another hearty endorsement for this set - especially at that price! Quote
blake Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 Another hearty endorsement for this set - especially at that price! One note though, make sure to check each of the CDs. There was some sort of production flaw. And several of the sets had CDs with a "film" on the music side that looked faintly like the cover art - as if the CDs were stacked before the graphics were "dry". Anyway, the CDs wouldn't play all the way through. They skipped around like they were scratched. I bought this set new shortly after it had gone OOP first from B&N... and then from Amazon. I returned about 5 copies - a couple to each vendor - before I got a good one. Quote
Kalo Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 I'll bet they sound great on that Silvertone! I want one of those! Seriously, there's nothing quite like hearing a 78 on the equipment it was meant to be played on. A buddy of mine collects both the discs and the players. The sound is much better and more detailed than you might imagine from lousy LP and CD remasterings; sometimes astonishly so. Quote
kh1958 Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 Exactly what's on this 4-CD set? The track listing of this great set is here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/samples/B...ing=UTF8#disc_1 Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 9, 2017 Report Posted June 9, 2017 Picked up this set for $16 at Landlocked a year or two ago and finally got around to listening to it over the past few days... wow! I already have some of it on other compilations, but it's a real treasure trove of music (I especially love the dates that involve a couple of Hoosiers, Big Sid Catlett and Sidney de Paris), and as Jazzbo noted, an amazing booklet, authored by Dan Morgenstern. If you see this at a reasonable price, snap it up, even if it's not the kind of jazz you ordinarily dig... I all but guarantee that you will eventually! Quote
Peter Friedman Posted June 9, 2017 Report Posted June 9, 2017 Don't pass this one by. It is marvelous set. Quote
Berthold Posted June 10, 2017 Report Posted June 10, 2017 Thanks for this recommendation! I´d ordered it right now for 17€ inc. shipment. Thanks! Quote
