catesta Posted November 26, 2007 Report Posted November 26, 2007 I'm thinking of taking the cell phone plunge, in lieu of the land line to boot. They seem to have proved to be fairly reliable, and they're mighty convenient. Thanks to everybody for testing them for me! I am doing that - I have no home phone. It works great! Same here. I've not had a land line for several years. I did the dastardly deed Wednesday a week ago, and I've already used 188 of my 300 minutes. Time flies when you're having a good time. Gave up the land line also? My suggestion would be to increase the minutes in your plan, or reduce your peak time calls. After you've been using only a cell phone for a few months you will get an accurate feel for how many minutes you need and can adjust accordingly. I have a lot of minutes available, but I don't use much since I hate talking on the phone. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted November 26, 2007 Report Posted November 26, 2007 That's me. I just use a Trac Phone. As expensive as the minutes are, I still come out ahead, because there aren't any $10.00 100 minute plans out there... Quote
Van Basten II Posted December 1, 2007 Report Posted December 1, 2007 To answer the question in the title of the thread, absolutely nothing. Public annoyance they are. Quote
porcy62 Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 To answer the question of the title of the thread: you can switch them off, and I do it most of the time. Though I think that generally cell phones are some sort of imposing annoyance, sometimes I found interesting listen to other people's private conversations, my personal social and psychological survey. Actually it happened to arguing with a guy at post office: he was bothered by the fact I was listening his own business, I said that a postal office is a public place so if he wanted some privacy he could go to the toilet and stick his cell phone...you know, I am an Organissimo Forum's member so I have to keep a reputation of rude guy. True story, anyway. And I gained a general applause from the crowd in the post office: the guy was really a bothersome idiot. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 (edited) Why do they let people in cells have phones? Is it an ACLU thing? Shouldn't this be in the political forum? Edited December 2, 2007 by Chuck Nessa Quote

LAL Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 When watching a really dull movie at the cinema and someones cell phone suddenly rings out loud and that someone starts speaking at the top of his voice and other movie viewers start swearing at the fella. Quote

BruceH Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 (edited) Screenwriters HATE cell phones. OTOH, what would the writers of The Departed have done without cellphones? They practically drove the plot. Edited December 2, 2007 by BruceH Quote
MoGrubb Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Another annoyance I've discovered is the "courtesy calls," recorded to boot. One was taking a freaking survey, wanting me to use minutes to listen to some BS political probe. After listening to the first one, like a doofus, I promptly hang up on them. Why do they let people in cells have phones? Is it an ACLU thing? Shouldn't this be in the political forum? *groan* Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Another annoyance I've discovered is the "courtesy calls," recorded to boot. One was taking a freaking survey, wanting me to use minutes to listen to some BS political probe. After listening to the first one, like a doofus, I promptly hang up on them. Oh yes - my wife has a mobile and in the last few days she's been getting calls from Orange (her network) to say that she hasn't personalised her answering message and would she please record something like... and then goes on to make suggestions about what she should say. Bloody cheek! But the second worst thing is that they put this on when they let her know there's a voicemail awaiting her - so she can't cut the buggers off or she won't get the voicemail. And the very worst thing is that she says THE BASTARDS CHARGE HER FOR THE PRIVILEGE OF LISTENING TO THE STUFF!!!!!!! MG Quote
MoGrubb Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 THE BASTARDS CHARGE HER FOR THE PRIVILEGE OF LISTENING TO THE STUFF!!!!!!! Yes, that's my biggest complaint. Matter of fact, that's my biggest complaint with cellphone service in general, you get charged for both incoming and outgoing calls. Just doesn't seem fair. Quote

It's just a different paradigm than the traditional local/long distance call rates, and "who is initiating the call". You simply pay for the air time on your phone, regardless of the distance of your call. Works fine for me. Except for the telemarketing stuff. That sucks no matter what kinda phone you are using. MoGrubb Posted December 4, 2007 Report Posted December 4, 2007 Judge suspended for jailing court - A US judge has been removed from the bench for jailing 46 defendants in his courtroom after none of them admitted being responsible for a ringing phone. (BBC) Because they were released that afternoon, the judge should be censored or lightly reprimanded, and that should be the end of it. [The military used to be "famous" for this kind of behavior; usually the "rat" was smoked out. But, that was a different time..] Quote
